I just took the detoured CA Zephyr from Denver Union Station to SLC. It was a nice 12 hour ride, on-time, even got into SLC ahead of schedule. I have never been on the usual route through the Rockies, but I can tell you it was a pleasant trip, with some interesting scenery; saw some bison outside Cheyenne, antelope a bit later, and a nice ride down the canyon above Ogden, where I sat in the lounge car. The only thing, it's about 8 hours before the one and only stop in Green River for a crew change. From what I've heard not quite the scenery you will find on the usual route. I plan to take it again around Thanksgiving on its normal route. I don't know about taking a bus on this or any route, but as for a normal driver and flyer between these cities, it was a pleasant distraction from the normal hassels of either I-80 or DIA.
