I will be driving from Denver to Susanville CA late December. Can anyone tell me if it will be safer on the north route: I25 to 80 the rest of the way, OR a slightly south route: I70 to US 50(6) connecting back to 80 just before Reno. The satellite view on google earth looks more mountainous on 70/50 but I am worried about snow on 80. Anyone with experience taking both routes in the winter? Thanks

We can tell you which route is better, if you can tell us the weather.

Fly to Reno and rent a car to drive to Susanville if at all possible. There is no good route for that time of the year. You would have to worry about the snow regardless of which way you go. I-80 is a lot less mountainous but I'm sure you'd have to worry about blowing snow. I-80 is definitely the better route so if you don't mind risking driving through a blizzard, go that route. You run the risk of either interstate being closed though. Reno usually is a pretty cheap flight so if it is just you, you would probably spend about the same amount as driving. Good luck either way. I hate winter driving.

From what I 've heard, I70 is much better than I80 in the winter due to extreme wind and snow.

Thank you William, I must drive as I need the car for 3 months. So do you think I would be wiser to try to go even further south and take I79 into Utah, then 15 south to Las Vegas then 95 north to Reno? I have lived here 20 years and never driven to CA on any of these routes. I know the snow can be terrible, so I'm looking for someone that may have driven any of these routes in winter and have a suggestion. I appreciate it.

The best way to do it is to make sure your car is road worthy, take extra care by bringing cold weather gear chains and life saving items...thermal blankets, batteries, flashlight, food, water, cell phone fully charged etc.

Take the most direct route and keep that radio tuned to the weather channel ALWAYS!!! Get behind a trucker and follow behind.....CB radio could be very helpful.

Leave a week early and plan to stay put in a motel if a storm blows in. If you get though as planned so much the better. But giving yourself several days leeway will be a good thing. Good Luck, be safe.

"moving to Susanville from Red Bluff, as soon as our house sells.

We were there yesterday scouting around and we really liked the town and the people.

Hugs
Lorraine

Thank you so much for your reply. Susanville is a great little town, well, not so little any more, but still has that small town feel. Thanks for the information and I had decided to leave a little early just in case. It kind of freaks me out thinking of getting stuck with an older dog and maybe no cell service in the middle of no where, but, I don't have much choice and I must trust I will be safe. Thanks again.

Hello, found your thread by googling this morning Wed Oct 14? And of course wondering how yr trip out (the q was which route was the best considering sev'l options, Dec driving); I just wondered how it turned out and which route you decided was the best for conditions, etc.

Be aware that 50 through Utah and Nevada is very isolated with long, long stretches of nothign between "towns" that are little more than a hotel and gas station.

After talking to some other people I have decided both routes could be pretty nasty in the winter, but have chosen I70. Its a little further south and hopefully not as snowy, and I have been assured by someone that has driven it twice in the winter that there are enough towns and less traffic to worry about if it is bad weather. Meaning I could drive more slowly without worrying that someone would be on my tail or driving like a crazy person. So I hope I have made the right decision. With the snow prediction for this winter in CO I am considering leaving before Dec. Thanks for your interest.
