I moved here 2 months ago. Can't speak to the teacher thing, though I could ask my roommate; she's a teacher in Aurora.

As for making friends, I used meetup.com, couchsurfing.com (they have lots of social activities for the CS community even if you don't host or use the actual service), joined the ultimate frisbee league and a choir. I also go to swing dancing and salsa nights and that's a great way to meet people.

I do get homesick; I love my hometown. But I've dealt with it by using skype to talk to my friends and my folks regularly, and by keeping busy. Maybe the best thing I did was spend a weekend up in the mountains; it's hard to miss home when you're surrounded by awesome scenery that you used to have to save up and go on vacation to see.

Part of my desire to be in Denver is because of the opportunity to be outdoors without being mobbed by people. Whether it's that occasional trip up in to the mountains, exploring towns out on the plains or just biking / walking the parks...there's something wonderfully melancholy and peaceful about the prospect that helps me through the notion of not having a lot of friends or family nearby initially.

Now cue the reality check crew in 3...2...1... =D
