Doing the house search an I came across an ad on craigslist for a 3 bd/2 ba house for $600 3BR/2BA Single Family House 2349 Hooker St (http://denver.craigslist.org/apa/1397289692.html - broken link)

Could anyone fill me in on why this house is so cheap? How's the neighborhood? Is this probably a scam?

Thanks!
Erin

Erin: Rule #1 of CL is that if it's too good to be true, it's a scam. Look at reputable sites like rent.com or rentals.com or realtor.com to get honest info. Sometimes the scammers take the pix and info from those honest sites, prepare their own bogus ads for CL, then collect a down payment and rent from unsuspecting people. Be careful.

Google "craigslist rental scams" and read up on them so you know what to look out for. I found the house I am currently renting on craigslist. Not all listing are fake. But like Mike said the ones that are too good to be true are scams. Be careful.

It could also be a typo.

You might need to put a 1 in front of that price.

This is what you do. Create a new yahoo id and send an email to the seller. You'll receive a mail back and it will be from someone in Nigeria or someone out of the country selling it by proxy and they ask you send a cheque LMAO.

New yahoo id you can forget about, coz they will keep spamming it.

I totally agree with the "sounds too good to be true" philosophy.

I guess I was more wondering about whether this price was typical of houses located in the same area and what, in general, the neighborhood that it is in is like. I have never heard of Hooker St (and it doesn't really sound like a street I want to live on ) and it's hard to tell on the map exactly where it is located.

Although, the google street view does appear to be nice.

That area (according to my realtor) was established/populated by jewish families originally. He said that the homes were all really well kept, and by driving through it looked very clean. We didn't get a chance to look at any homes right there, probably because they were all out of our price range.

Hooker street does run quite a ways though, so I'm talking about the area right around Sloan Lake.

Ha! So, I e-mailed the landlord. And what do you know, they are Christian mission workers who are currently in West Africa. BUT they said if I just sent them a check for the deposit amount, they would be HAPPY to hold the house for me.

I'll hold my breath.

Thanks for your help guys
