As far as groceries/stores go, I am within 2-3 minutes from 3 grocery stores and within 10 minutes of 2 big box stores from my place a half block north of the Highland "border".
Safeway @ 44th & Lowell and also 26th @ Federal
Soopers @ 38th & Sheridan
Sunflower @ 38th & Wolf?
Target on Sheridan and about 21st
Wal Mart on Sheridan and about 72nd
Shopping/groceries are not a problem around here.

Again, the Highlands is a cheaper area for a reason.
Personally I would live in Old Town Arvada before I considered the Highlands.
I know a couple folks who have made a ton of money flipping in the Highlands areas since the late 90's. They all now live east of I-25 now that that can afford it. That says quite a bit.

Yes, you live in a great area and I live just north of you in Arvada. Let us not confuse the newcomers and tell them the area you live is really north of West Highlands which is much different than Highland. Do you not live in Berkeley or Regis???
West Highland borders Sheridan and as WilliamPacker indicates, all these stores are on Sheridan. Sheridan is the closest street to Northwest Denver that provides a good mix of shopping, as Sheridan, for the most part, is the western boundary of Denver.
The West side provides some good quality and inexpensive suburban neighborhoods in addition to Denver. There is Wheat Ridge, west and around 38th. Edgewater, west of Sloan's Lake. Arvada, just north and northwest of 52nd. Lakewood just west adjoining 15th (West Colfax).
In my opinion, the Northwest side of Denver provides some of the best parks and open space. Berkeley Lake, Willis Case Golf Course, Rocky Mountain Lake, Sloan's Lake, Inspiration Point etc.

We used to live in Sloan's Lake and really liked it. I don't get why some feel that the west side is somehow "lesser".

Because you have to drive east of I-25 for 95 percent of things unless you are a hermit. Again, prices are cheaper for a reason.
Pay the minimal premium if in the city limits and live on the east of I-25 -- at least I would recommend as much.

What "things"? And it's not like it's 100 miles to the east side of I-25. We actually mostly leaned towards the west, anyway, for activities.

I don't understand how living west of I-25 is any kind of a problem. The area I live in is cheaper because the homes are generally smaller. Home prices south of where I am, in the Highlands are getting ridiculous. Like what you would see in Washington Park, City Park, etc. There is nothing wrong with NW Denver. I do feel like I am away from the city when I am home. I like that feeling. If I need to be downtown I can be there within 5-10 minutes with a short trip down Speer.
I don't know how you can say the Highlands is cheaper for a reason (I don't consider it cheap) but then say you would rather live in Old Town Arvada. Isn't that area much cheaper than Highlands? I absolutely hate driving along Wadsworth most days. That area is a traffic nightmare. I have friends that live west of Wads alongs 44th and I also go to that Home Depot sometimes. I have to plan my commute like I'm taking I-25.
Livecontent, we live in Berkeley just across from Old Elitches. I feel the area is very convenient. If only I could find a job closer to home.

I live in the Adams County Part of Arvada, just up on Tennyson where you live. My favorite place to shop is that Sunflower market in Elitches. I drive down Tennyson, about 3 miles and many times stop and just stroll along the shops. I like to drive home by going across West 38th on Wolf, in back of Sunflower, and driving slowly through those neighborhoods. The different craftsman houses are just so comforting with all the trees. Then I stop at Berkeley Lake Park and enjoy a nice peaceful time. Going to that small old library is another one of my restful haunts.
I have been living in my house for 23 years and I am very familiar with the changes in Berkeley. The area is so great because you all the great lake parks nearby; you have easy access to Downtown Denver; you have many small independent shops and restaurants in North Denver; you have more extensive basic shopping along Sheridan; you have the nice suburbs of Wheat Ridge, just down the road; you have access to all the amenities of the west metro area.
It will even get better along Sheridan with the completion of the West Corridor rail line to Lakewood and a Sheridan station at about 13th Avenue. It will add to the already started redevelopment. In addition, a new rail station will be near my house at 60th and Sheridan on the Gold Corridor. This last week this commuter rail has got final approval from the FEDS. This will all make this area of the West Side of Denver and the immediate suburbs as a greater place to live.
I can write much more about this area--yea, I guess I have in all my posts. I think today, I will take a short trips, down the road, to Inspiration Point http://www.denvergov.org/portals/654...int%20Park.pdf and look over the great neighborhoods of the west side.

Such as what??? That is a ridiculous statement. Prices are going UP in these neighborhoods.
OP, here are some articles talking more about neighborhoods in and around Denver, including Highlands - West Highland, LoHi - and Berkeley, Sunnyside, etc.

Your Home Is Worth More Than You Think! | May 2009 | 5280 Magazine | 5280.com (The 8 Neighborhoods in this issue include several on the Northwest side of Denver -- again, Highlands, Berkeley, Sunnyside, etc.)

Livecontent--I love my area for many of the reasons you listed. My house is 2 blocks from Tennyson Park and across 38th from the park where Old Elitches is. For bigger parks like you mentioned I can head to Berkeley Lake, Rocky Mountain or Sloans in a short bike ride or longerish walk. Another reason I love my area is the access to interstates. I'm 5 minutes or less from I-70, I-76 and I-25. As Highlands Gal mentioned the home prices are going up. I don't consider the area cheap at all. I am glad I got in when I did.
