Last time I spoke with someone at the school district in Douglas County about the year-round schedule, they had mentioned that they were moving away from it over the next few years because it interferes with multi-kid family schedules since the Jr Highs and High Schools follow traditional schedules. This was Summer 08, so I don't know if things have changed, but worth asking the question if it's important.

If you are looking for the mountain feel, without being too far from the Denver metro area, take a look at Morrison, Ken Caryl Ranch, Golden and the Green Mountain neighborhood of Lakewood. All of these areas are safe and have decent schools, particularly when compared to JAX.
I would look for areas below 6,500 feet. Colorado winters become much more intense and last significantly longer when you go above 7,000 feet. Communities such as Evergreen and Genesee are examples of Denver metro communties above 7,000 feet.

Are you going to be making ski trips every day? Let me put this another way, if you only have to work three days a week and plan on going to the mountains four days a week (which seems like an awful lot, isn't there more to life than mountains/mountain activities? ), it might behoove you to live in the western half of the metro (read: Jefferson County, or at least west of I-25) as opposed to somewhere centrally located to hospitals.
When I lived in a 2200 sqft house in Aurora, gas/electric combined ranged from $100-$150/mo and water routinely averaged > $100/mo .
As for Cherry Creek Schools that are year round....as far as the S/SE Aurora 80015/80016 portion goes, I'd say that about 35% of the elementary schools were year round (as of 2007).

Thanks for all the help guys, some places I have not heard of which is good, more options. I wont be in the mountains 4 days a week but I will use them often. Here in flat florida I mountain bike 3-4 days a week for exercise so a place with trails would be nice since I live 2 miles from the best trail here.
If the high school and middle school are not all year round then I would want just regular school. I have a kid in all three and would want them the same.
Thanks everyone for your help.

There are several year-round schedules in these districts, some closer to the traditional schedule than others. I believe the districts try to work with the parents to get kids who have sibs in middle/high school on the more traditional schedules. All the kids get the same breaks, as well, e.g. spring break, winter break, etc.

I'd recommend Jeffco or Broomfield. Somewhere along the foothills.
First, figure out where work is and go from there.
