Another vote for the Subaru here. I have a WRX wagon and I love it.

Unless it's changed with the new 2010 model, they're still made in Japan.

Correct.

The question posed is much to vague. Similar to saying, I wish to buy a house.

It seems strange that with the well known American hatred for all things hatchback Honda, BMW (5 series GT) and Porsche (Panamera) would introduce these niche vehicles in the current economy over here.

To the subaru naysayers stating that they're practical, slow yuppie-mobiles, I have to assume you haven't had any experience with any of the turbocharged models. They're still somewhat practical(I drive an STi, and get 24mpg highway,) however they're anything but boring. Plus, forced induction engines have a nice advantage over others at altitude. The forester xt, for example, has a quicker 0-60 time than a 350z, and is pretty damn capable offroad to boot. The 2.5i models are definitely blah mobiles, though.

My Subaru Legacy L with 4 new Arctic Claw snow tires had traction roughly equivalent to a sherman tank in this last big storm.

this isnt the 90s anymore. hatchbacks and 5th doors are popular and sell well.
stationwagons are something else, but they dont make buick roadmaster stationwagons anymore. modern stationwagons are much smaller than they were 15-20 years ago
