When I lived in Fort Collins, I moved into a single family neighborhood for a while when I was single, and brought a couple of roommates with me. Although it was in Fort Collins, it would be a fairly typical suburban neighborhood indistinguishable from thousands of other neighborhoods further south in metro Denver. Everyone else except me on the street were in their 30s-40s, upper-middle-income, and had multiple kids. Being single, most neighbors were courteous but not really friendly, and I was the same way, mainly because I couldn't relate to the minivans and soccer practice lifestyle and they couldn't relate to mine. I certainly didn't fault them for it, but I knew that they'd prefer a family in the house in which I lived, in fact my next door neighbors told me so. However, I did have the neighbors complain on several occasions that one of my roommates was a bad influence on their kids because she was a "goth." (She was one of the nicest people you'd ever meet; her crime was to have dark hair and prefer dark clothing, and certainly wasn't a goth.) There were a couple of other battles of the same nature, so I knew they were thrilled when I moved a year or two later (my move was not related to them). I didn't dislike the neighborhood, but I did make a mental note that I personally would prefer not to live in a neighborhood that was comprised exclusively of families with kids, or for that matter, in a neighborhood that was characterized by uniformity of any type.

Thanks, COflower,
New to this area--didn't know people actually had an acronym for couples without kids! What crap!

I agree with you that it's none of anyone's business, but unfortunately, that doesn't stop people from asking. I've had many people when they find out I don't want kids, ask why? Or they find out I'm 27 & past the 'typical marrying age' & find out I'm not married. You're right--my true friends & my family don't really question it. Kids aren't really for me, either. They're a choice.
Good post.

Good luck to you, movin' on up--I hope you & your wife find a nice place that works for your lifestyle!

DINK is actually a term that has been around the US for a long time, at least 20 yrs. Apparently it is an offshoot of YUPPIE.
