I'm always curious how people determine the level of competition in any given field in a city "The competition is stiff" is pretty much the story I hear from everyone in any halfway-desirable city.

FWIW, none of the nurses I know (my spouse included) who are competent, have good references and applies for jobs for which they were qualified have had ANY trouble finding jobs, in the cities of Colo Spgs, Denver, Seattle, and Austin where I currently live. There is a need for nurses everywhere, even in popular cities to move to...there's no denying that! That includes ADNs and BSNs. Still, it's good advice to have something in hand before moving-- you never know for sure. But I wouldn't sweat it. Shoot, if competition is stiff for nurses, I can't imagine how bad it is for less in-demand fields.

No one's talking about the elephant in the room. He's 22. If he's reasonably cute and reasonably articulate, he'll get a job.

I guess that means I am incompetent and have bad references, despite having been a nurse for 40 years and working for almost that many. So are the many other nurses I know who have had a hard time finding a job in the Denver area. EVERY TIME I have been in the job market in metro Denver, it has taken me a while to find a job.

I'm sure you're not. Anything can happen in the job market in any field, I suppose. Everyone's opinion in based off of their own experiences, and yours are obviously different than mine. The last person I know who applied for nursing jobs in Denver got the 2nd job for which she applied. But hearing about your experience, I suppose it just depends. Obviously better to plan for a longer job search by saving and/or having a job in hand.

Back in Champaign, IL, where I lived before we moved here, it was almost a given that if you got an interview you got the nursing job. I used to say you would show your license to the director of nursing and she'd ask "Can you start yesterday?" It's not that way here. It's esecially not that way if you want a non-hospital job. I've known new grads who looked for months (for a hospital nursing job).
