Default Where should I live while I look for a rental house?

I just got a great job in Littleton and I'm going to be moving out there in April or May. I want to spend a few months building up my $$$ and figuring out where I want to get a rental house for my family, which is coming out in June.

I was thinking an extend stay hotel, maybe? I don't need anything fancy. And, to throw a wildcard in the mix, I'd like to bring my golden retriever, but she could wait till June if need be.

Someplace within 25 minutes of Littleton is ok.

Find a place to rent that is as close to your work as you can get. Maybe you'll get lucky and the place you're renting will be a great area that you will concentrate on when it's time to buy. If it's not a great area, at least you'll know, you won't be wasting gas commuting, and you can spend some time searching for a better place to buy. When we moved to Denver, we rented a home in Green Valley Ranch. That was the closest place we could get to the airport. A year after, we were so excited to get the heck out of there but at least we knew where we DIDN'T want to live. That year though, was spent with my husband only having to drive less than 10 minutes to work every day. That was worth it until we had a better idea of where to search for a home.

I can see a lot of different "routes" for you. Rent a room in a house, which will likely be the cheapest, get you in a 'nicer' place that has some furnishings... but you have to share a space and it's a crap-shoot as to the quality of home owner (I've had my best living experience doing this, and 2nd from the worst). Some will allow pets, have the yards to support an active dog, etc...

You can do a short term apartment lease, but the dog will be couped up all day, you'll have no furnishings, and my best apartment living experience is just barely above my worst 'renting a room' experience above.

Long-term stay hotel, most don't allow dogs (though, you could get lucky).... but that's punishing the dog again with small spaces. It's easy, no commitment and someone else will clean up once a week.

The last option would be to just take a weekend to look for a house and move in ahead of your family.

If I were moving alone, I'd look to rent a room. Since I moved with my wife while we did house shopping (and then renovation), we did 2 nights in a pet-friendly hotel then a 3 month apartment lease (where we only lived for 2 months before moving into our house, just could NOT deal with the apartment complex anymore).

I am currently staying here - TownePlace Suites Denver Southeast: extended stay/relocation, pet friendly, green hotel located by Swedish Hospital It is on the light rail line and about 15 minutes from Cherry Creek State Park, which has a fantastic off leash dog park. My dog is fine when I leave during the day.

I am quite happy. Less than $30/night. It is in a very safe area. Dog is a one time $100 fee. Includes a full kitchen, a double bed, internet/tv/cleaning/linens, etc. Cookies and coffee most of the time. Very nice staff. If you stay longer than 30 days, you don't pay occupancy taxes.

The Marriott? Interesting, I never thought of checking hotels for long-term rates. The web site shows the rates as $28.33 per night if you're staying 60+ days, but is listed as Corporate Housing. Do you know if there are any qualifying requirements - i.e. do you have to be an employer to rent at this rate?

I'm pretty much in the same situation and I'm not looking to sign a 12 month lease somewhere in a city I don't know too well. I was considering a 3-month lease somewhere until I get my bearings. There are other places offering furnished short-term rentals (anyone use Blueline properties in Cherry Creek/Glendale?)

Thank you KCtoDenver - the Marriott seems like a good option.

No requirements other than agreeing to the length of stay. I am charged every 30 days. Get a Marriott rewards card if you can pay with your own money so you can end up with some free hotel nights. Call the manager if you have questions. She is quite nice. I've been there about 6 weeks now and couldn't be happier. It is just a studio. If you are looking for more space it might not be for you but the frige, stove, and microwave are full sized and there is enough cupboard space for a weels worth of food. Comes with plates, utensils, pots and pans - I picked up a few extra glasses but it came with 4.

Easy walking distance to most of your every day needs - grocery, starbucks, barber, a few restaurants, etc.

I really like not having to wash linens, towels, vacume, and such. They do a "refresh" one day a week and a full clean one day a week. You pick the days. On the refresh day, they bring you new towels, dish soap, and a few other little things. On the full clean, they change the bed, do the dishes if you leave them in the sink, clean the bath and kitchen. I leave cash on the counter the day she does the full clean.

I am on the first floor since I figured that would be easier with the dog and I am pleased with that choice. I haven't noticed hardly any noise and it is a generally sleepy little place.

Good luck with the new job and the move.

I have a golden retriever. Do you think they'll allow that big of a dog?

Yep. I've seen a few huge black labs. As long as you keep it on a leash.

Default $30 a night?

Hi KC,

Are you sure the price is $30 a night?
I just checked their site and the average price hovers around $100 even for extended stays.

Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Greetings from Miami,

Annette
