I'm looking to reduce my internet service costs and am willing to give up on speed. I have tried DSL and cable internet services in Denver and I have been paying around 50-60$ per month. Any calls made to the service providers results in marginal reduction in cost by ADDING additional phone or tv service under the name of bundling.

Can anyone here recommend an alternative? Also, Google gave me something called BasicISP that provides dial-up services as well and I'm looking to see if anyone has tried this service before. Thanks.

Forget the dialup. Its so slow, you'll die of old age waiting for web pages to load and forget downloading anything as simple as a Windows or antivirus update.

Qwest has a price for life that knocks a few dollars off each month. Trade-off is you have to sign a 2 year contract. My service is 12mb down and 5mb up for $62/mo after taxes. I think you can get basic DSL for around $40/mo.

Is that just for the DSL or does that include voice service too? I have cable and don't even have or want an analog phone line so I wouldn't benefit from bundling. Maybe the thread starter would be better off with a slower Internet connection from the cable company and dropping the telco altogether.

With Qwest, you can get 1.5/896 for $30/month (no phone), plus $5 modem rental if you don't own and whatever taxes.

With Comcast, you can get Basic TV and internet (12/2) "bundled" for $35 plus $5 modem rental and fees... I'm sitting at about $43/month. The $3 more a month is sorta worth it, but the hassle of dealing with Comcast (worst cable/ISP I've EVER dealt with, anywhere, anytime) is tiring. They constantly screw with pricing, features, whatever. Sure wish we could get Bresnan here in Denver... for 3 years in Wyoming, they didn't once make any unannounced changes and my rates increased less than $2 in that time. Quality of service was heads and shoulders over Comcast too.

While you Could go back to dial-up, that'd require a basic phone line ($20) and a dial-up account ($10?)... which puts you right back at the entry-level options above. One Could try using Cricket/cell carriers. Looks like Cricket is $40/month with no contract, and they'll toss in the modem for free. For a laptop user, this would mean surfing anywhere there is cell service. No idea on quality of service though.

Thats promotional pricing right?

When I had TV service with them my promotional rate was $66 after tax....when that promotion ran out it jumped to $100. They do the same with internet service don't they?

Yup, promotional... but a 5 minute call to complain and they adjust the price back down. We were told to do this by 2 different Comcast employees.... ironically enough. Worked for me last month when they bumped the rates.

The Quest rate is promotional too (12 months vs. 6 for Comcast).

Qwest is actually a contract. My contract term is 24 months.

Thanks for the replies, all. I currently have Qwest internet + phone service and I don't need the phone at all. My monthly payment to just over 50$ per month and if I were to cut my phone service, which I don't need at all, I still will be (was, before I was encouraged to add on the phone line by Qwest) paying 49.99$ + taxes for the internet service alone. I do not want to get into a contract and I feel seriously gypped by the whole deal.

It is mainly the reason why I want to try anything other than the standard Qwest/Comcast option. However, I do not seem to have much of a choice.
