I am considering an extended stay near Des Moines. If I want to avoid airport noise, what are some areas I ought to stay away from? Three areas I've been looking at are Norwalk, Waukee, and Johnston. Any guidance? I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

You have nothing to worry about. All the places you want to stay are plenty far away from the airport. You may hear a slight noise in Norwalk, but I doubt it.

DSM International isn't exactly JFK. I used to work a few blocks from the airport and rarely noticed it. Any of the places you're considering would be fine.

Exactly. I like DSM because it is small and easy to get around, but it's not a busy airport. I refer to it as "adorable"

I will say that when I first moved to Des Moines and I lived in Urbandale, I did notice airplanes occasionally. But that was because I had moved from Burlington where the airport is just a regional and you never hear planes. It was just a different sound to me.

Now I only notice the sound of planes if the National Guard is flying over in their jets.

Hey Rayman129, Duster1979, and ElleTea, thank you very much for sharing your thoughts on the airport noise. We've lived in very noisy areas (near MSP) and extremely quiet areas. Sounds like DSM is on the quiet side of the spectrum. If it's one plane every now and then, I guess that's bearable. I know I don't want to be around one-plane-per-minute ever again though! Thanks again!

Lived in Norwalk all of the time. The runways will give a bit of noise if they're flying final approach from the South West, which is often. It isn't bad noise, nothing annoying or ridiculous. A light buzz here or there.

You'll also get the F16's flying over head but they'll be gone soon.

I would be happy with Norwalk....if you can handle paying taxes thru the roof!
