@atler -
I also wondered why the census bureau took the base estimate instead of the actual count. When you run the numbers using the actual count the order of cities does change a little bit, but Des Moines still takes the 11th place spot. (Clarification - Des Moines actually ranked 12th in the original table, not 11th, because there was a tie for 6th. So Des Moines and Grand Rapids do trade spots and moves up one, to 11th)

I think that with the extra 751 added in, the percentage change for Des Moines does rise by about .375 which moves it ahead of the Grand Rapids rate & up to right on the heels of the 9th place rank on the list.

It's funny watching the worker bees here scramble to do damage control when somebody points out a simple fact.

Of the five largest cities in Iowa, Davenport had the highest percentage increase between the 2010 census and the 2012 estimate. That isn't a gaffe. That's reality backed up by the latest census estimates released by the government.

But, please, carry on with your frantic spin. I'm rather entertained by it all.

I'm sure it was an honest oversight, so here's your gaffe so there is no confusion and you can address the correct issue:

...not from core urban renewal...like the kind Davenport has experienced with a
large increase in downtown loft housing.

We're waiting to see your own gaffe "damage control" here funk.
Where are you? Aren't your own worker bees helping you out or has the hive gone quiet?

That is not the point. Your comments about Davenports downtown growth dwarfing Des Moines is what I am referring to.

And a 1 year difference of .7 percentage points is negligible anyway. Why the big push to diminish Des Moines?

It's not about diminishing Des Moines. It's about pointing out that misleading statements (i.e. Des Moines' population growth outpaces state) have become the M.O. for folks such as yourself. You completely ignore facts that don't paint the rosiest of pictures, and tear down other cities that might threaten your perceived superiority in Iowa.

Ronnie Jonez is absolutely right about folks such as yourself. You push this cult-like mentality about Des Moines and become immediately defensive when facts are presented that challenge what you think should be blindly accepted as conventional wisdom.

I rather get a kick out of your uber-defensive replies. Nobody is saying Des Moines isn't growing, or isn't a great place. However, there are other cities in Iowa that have similar population growth patterns, and you immediately marginalize those facts with your bluster.

Anyone who repeatedly uses the word "cult" in any of it's forms here as a descriptive term for Des Moines residents going forward should be sent to their Funk & Wagnall's Standard Dictionary to look for a synonym.
It's actually cultish that 2 people here have circled their wagons & post the same things over & over & over. No matter the Des Moines thread topic, they get into the mix & lay the same, tiresome stuff on us & change the direction of the thread to suit their purpose.
When will they ever bring anything new to the table on these threads? We're still waiting.
