Hello, we are thinking of a potential move to DSM in the future. I have looked on Zillow, Trulia, and Craiglist to get ideas for what rental houses go for but I don't see many. Is there another website I should look at, or is this something people typically handle in person through an agency there?

Or are there simply not that many rental homes in the area?

We had the same experience when preparing for our move to DM. Since we have 2 medium-size dogs, we really needed a fenced-in yard, but couldn't find anything suitable online that accepted pets. In the end, we decided to buy a house, instead. Hope you're able to find more help than we did -- good luck!

Lol. Des Moines is one of the most reasonable places to live in this country.

I beg to differ, DM is has one of the highest property tax compared to it's size nation wide.
Do some research and you will be shocked!
Worst part about Dead moines is it's the meth capital of the world. This makes for high home owners ins.
rates, and outragous HOA dues.
Again do the research

DSM is much cheaper than where I live now, so I am not concerned about that. Just trying to get an idea of what prices can rent what types of houses. I know the area of the city (school district) I would want to buy in if it came to that, but preferably I'd rather rent first (in any area) than mess around with a big move AND a home purchase at once. Thank you everyone!

I own a home here. Property tax is higher than some places and lower than some places. You will pay much less in property tax here than anywhere on either coast, or in the south. I pay below the national average for home owners insurance. Des Moines is not the meth capital of the world either. This may have been true at some point, but meth use and manufacturing is much lower in Iowa than most west coast states. If you are trying to make the case that home owners insurance is high because of meth production then you may need to do the research. Not me.

Around here you will pay around the same, sometimes less, to own a home. For instance I recently purchased a house in a suburb and pay less on the mortgage than I would in rent.
