I lived by the Jordan Creek mall too. You can get a lot of house for your dollar in WDM compared to many other similar suburban areas. Traffic along Jordan Creek and Mills Civic Parkways can be irritating in rush hour, but it's nothing if you come from a larger city. There is quite a bit to do in WDM, schools are excellent, and if you have a family, you'd be hard pressed to find a better area.

Des Moines is evolving. It's a nice place to live. University and 2nd ave north to the river and west to Drake University is the worst part of town for crime. It is just north of downtown and I-235. The art and science center are nice. Greenwood park near the art center is nice. Great ethnic food if you like. I recently moved and don't miss a thing, but it's a great place to raise a family.

That's probably the best way to sum up all things Des Moines-related.

However, if you're from small-town Iowa (which most DM transplants are) it will seem like New York City.

Crime really isn't a concern anywhere in DSM. I found that east side and the area around Drake to be fine, even though it's a working class area. It may be a little more seedy for a small town Iowan, but it was nothing compared to coming from a high crime area.

The thing about WDM is that you truly do get a lot of value for your dollar. The WDM burbs are as nice as the better suburbs of Nashville, but you can live much more inexpensively than around Nashville. Schools are excellent, construction is newer, and crime is low. Wages are high compared to COL.

West Des Moines is BEAUTIFUL! You wont have to worry about crime or anything because this is a great community!

I recommend visiting the Jordan Creek Town Center (mall, great resturaunts). I would also recommend visiting downtown. There are a lot of places to see and do in Des Monies
