Alter, it's my understanding that several plans are being discussed, including a tear-down, but I don't have an online source for that . . . I heard it in passing. I imagine there will be an article before long. As far as I know, they still don't know what caused the fire, although I admit that I haven't seen the local news in several days, so I may have missed it.

Thank you rayman & Meemur for the exta info you supplied here.
Feel free to drop back into this thread with any new news in the future. Frankly that goes for anyone else too.
I try but can't keep abreast of everything given my location of about 900 miles to the southeast of Des Moines.
Younkers downtown & Dayton's in downtown Minneapolis gave me my first flagship department store memories that stuck with me. They both seemed huge & so very complete as compared to other department stores in smaller cities.

Atler, I thought I heard them say on the news that they were going to demo the Yonkers Building tomorrow (I was doing dishes in the kitchen and didn't hear clearly). I found a link:

^ they are taking out the more damaged and taller east buiding, but are going to try and save the west building from my understanding.

My mom and I took the skywalks around to look at the damage last Friday. We were a little surprised that nothing had really been touched in over a month. Still glass and debris all over the streets.

That very well may be! I work in Ankeny and am doing some odd hours right now, so I'm not keeping up very well with the Des Moines news, just weather warnings.

I just heard that the other night and thought of Alter's request.

It is open now. Other streets closer are closed, but Locust is now open.
