I received a very good job offer so I will be moving to Des Moines in a few weeks. I'm currently in the Philadelphia area as of now and there is alot of diversity here. I'm looking at a few apartments in the East Village/Sherman hill area. I'm a 30yr old single Asian male and I'm into the nightlife scene (bar, clubs, comedy clubs, restaurants) and I like to travel and workout alot. I know it's not going to be like Philadelphia but what can I expect? I'm very excited to start a new chapter, but the same time, I feel as if it will be hard to date? Any thoughts?

I'd say you are looking at the better areas (East Village/Sherman Hill) in Des Moines to locate if you're looking for diversity (by Des Moines standards anyway) and getting to meet people.

I'd start by getting involved with neighborhood group(s). A good start for either would be the Downtown Neighborhood Association

Downtown Neighborhood Association of Des Moines

Good luck and welcome!

Just an FYI here to note that a new thread which may give helpful additional perspectives on Des Moines is found in the "General U.S." forum area found just below the last of the various state forums. The thread title is, "What kind of people live in Des Moines & Boise?"
A new post there by steel03, who visits the Iowa forum occasionally, seems pretty spot on.

Based on my past experiences living in Des Moines, and my more recent visits back there, the city has come a heck of a long mile from it's former well deserved dull reputation & formerly lagging economy.
Certainly the climate there has it's ups and downs and can be harsh depending on the season but I've found that I desire a four seasons climate & a setting that is usually verdant to mostly green close to half of the year & where it is actually EASY to grow things.... in rich, black soil, no less!
