and I am very impressed with the city of Des Moines. I work in Manhattan and came out here for 2 days on business. On the East coast, most people don't know anything about the Midwest outside of Chicago. My first time in the Des Moines, let alone the state, led me to a very nicely laid out, walkable downtown, with some unique restaurants, sights and a pretty sweet skyline lit up at night. This is probably one of the most underrated places I've been to and I really do look forward to returning again.

Thanks for sharing with us, OP. I hope that you have a chance to return when it's warmer. Nothing beats the long, lingering twilights of Des Moines in the summer evenings, and it's nice to be in an affordable downtown that doesn't close at 5 pm.

It sure is nice to be in a city where I don't have to pay $8 or 9 for a beer! Being able to drive to my hotel by the airport to Downtown in a little over 5 minutes was great. Don't ever take that for granted- that same drive distance wise anywhere in the NYC tristate would take almost a half hour at rush hour.

I ate at Fong's Pizza because the client I met mentioned it. First time I've ever had sesame chicken on a pizza and probably won't be the last.

I know! I'm from Columbus, Ohio. In no way could I have gotten across town at rush hour in 20 minutes as I can here, when the weather is good. Blowing snow slows us down a bit, but it's still easier to get around here than the larger metros.
