Hi everybody,

My partner is thinking of moving to Des Moines after we have spent a long stint overseas. So I have found a few promising listings for affordable houses that look really nice. I am willing to live in suburbia and am pretty easily pleased. However are there any areas with in 45 minutes to Des Moines were you can get a larger amount of acreage for cheap?

Farms seems to cost a small fortune so I have given up hope of finding an old farm stead per se. I just want a green patch of land to grow things on and perhaps a few trees with in 45 minutes of Des Moines. I have building skills and can build my own home potentially but the price of land seems a bit high in comparison to just buying a house on a smaller piece of land.

Is it possible to get say 5 acres with a few trees or something nice about it for say around $35,000? If so what areas would be best to look in. So far everything I have seen seems to be a bit west of Van Meter.

I am originally from Minnesota so love the water but would really want to avoid areas that flood if possible. So I just want a patch with a couple of shade trees and room to have a garden and dog.

Another possibility is to go to Omaha because of the insurance and finance industries are also present there. So anybody with advice on Omaha and cost comparisons and quality of life please spill the beans.

I am leaning towards Des Moines because it is seems to be more in the middle and there are a handful of cities with in a days drive to visit. Chicago, Minnaepolis (which is my hometown) KC, Omaha, Ozark mountains etc are a days drive.

Sorry for the lengthy first post but so many questions and so little time.

Van Meter or Winterset are your best bets. For that much land, that budget might be a bit tight. You get a few more options if you can move to a $45,000 price point, but you're still looking at "executive estate" type lots.

What about Earlham or towards the south? Another 10 minutes commute wouldn't kill us.

You could probably get that information from the Iowa Water Well Association. Iowa Water Well Association
