According to reports, Meredith Corporation (headquartered in Des Moines) is buying out Time, Inc. Pretty good for Meredith!

From what I have heard, Meredith was in the past fairly low paying for free lance journalism jobs. Or course, journalists are pretty desperate for any kind of work in these times. Meredith does have a really pretty corporate headquarters building in DM. I don't remember hearing a lot about whether or not they are a good corporate citizen in Des Moines, though. Do they contribute generously to Des Moines area non-profits?

The fact that the buyout was funded with help from the Koch brothers is very, very interesting. Now what do those boys have up their evil little ultra right wing regressive manipulative sleeves?

I currently work at TimeInc in New York as part of IT staff. There are rumors that Meredith is looking into moving support staff to Des Moines, which made me want to look into this city more. Unfortunately no one has been told anything at this point and it's mostly wait and see until Meredith and TimeInc management comes together to decide what their plan is going forward. It's a little scary, and people are nervous. I see several people in management positions leaving which is not a good sign.

My colleagues are 25-30 years senior than me, so I'm not sure if they'll be able to relocate. For me, it seems like a great opportunity to move and start a new life. I've been thinking about moving from NYC for several years now.

I wonder how you guys feel about these rumors.

Steve

I'm sorry you haven't gotten any responses yet. I guess none of us have heard anything about what's happening with Meredith.

If you do have to move to Des Moines, it won't be so bad. It's a nice enough city with a good airport, and certainly more affordable than where you are located now. You can always fly home now and then to visit family and old friends.

I'm watching the Meredith/Time Inc. situation with great interest, as I still wonder what the Koch Brothers' plans are for The Times and other publications. Could be scary!

Come on... the Koch brothers are not ultra right wing; they're more libertarian; they don't even believe in restricting immigration levels. They also give out loans with interest to many people/places, so this likely won't have any effect on Meredith's operations, as long as Meredith makes its loan payments.

Besides, so much of mainstream media is now far-left, that it won't hurt if a few more of them get shifted back toward the center.

I just hope Meredith continues to do well, since they're a decently-sized presence in Des Moines. I took a little bit of offense when national media took swipes at Des Moines because of the buyout, because they automatically assumed people here were somehow inferior to the coastal elites. Screw them; the Midwest is clearly superior.
