Hello all,

My husband and I are moving to Ames at the end of the month. We need to start calling around to set up high-speed Internet installation, as I will require it for work when we get there.

I have read nothing but bad things about Mediacom. Is there any other game in town? Are the reviews of Mediacom accurate? What companies would you recommend? Thanks.

We would also be interested in Internet-cable packages if reasonably priced, esp. since they are sometimes better deals than standalone services.

Thanks in advance.

Whe have Mediacom for both cable and internet here in Des Moines. Bottomline: you can't find faster high speed than Mediacom in central Iowa and yes, service can be questionable at times but the same goes for most other providers. Just seems to go with the territory but you'll be fine IMO with Mediacom.

Mediacom hands down. Customer Service is absolutely TERRIBLE, but you cannot beat the speed and stability of their internet service. One thing you will want to keep in mind is that Mediacom now has a cap on your monthly data use, which is fine unless you are constantly downloading large files. We have had Mediacom for 7 years and I can think of only a few times that our internet went down.

Like all ISPs, make sure you read the fine print for their new customer packages. The deals are great, but when the deal expires, the rates can go up more than 100 dollars a month.

Bumping this old thread to find out what the ISP situation is like. In Houston, I'm using Comcast for their internet, tv & home security. I suspect I'll only be able to use what the apartment complex I move to has, but is there an ISP that pretty much dominates the market the way Comcast does in Houston?

The other large company is Centurylink. I honestly can't recommend them, unless you are the sort of user who mainly uses the internet for email and paying bills. In that case, their $35/month account might work for you, but be advised that it is SLOW and subject to a lot of downtime when it rains a lot in Ames, where a lot of their underground cable seems to be.

If you want to stream or move large files around, you will likely be frustrated and disappointed. Get Mediacom.

There have been other companies who have tried to corner the market, but I really can't recommend them, either.
