Absolutely ridiculous. From the Grimes 80 interchange, you can be in Urbandale in not even 1 minute. To get to Clive/WDM is maybe 3-4 minutes tops. A person will have everything they need there. Maybe they're a few minutes farther from the amazing experience you call Downtown Des Moines...big deal.

Not worth splitting hairs over.

I'm not splitting hairs. The guy/gal says he's young and wants to "hang out with people his/her age". IMO, Grimes wouldn't be the place to settle down right out of college as you're going to find a bunch of young families...but not so many young singles living there.

There's much more interesting places for a young college grad to settle and meet like-minded individuals.

You are simply stating that the person must live in 'Urban DSM' than anywhere else. A popular viewpoint with your kind. There's probably more single people living in two blocks of apartment complexes in WDM than anywhere downtown.

The Clive bars and West Glen are closer to Grimes than DSM proper anyways (they are filled with single people in their 20s), so are the malls and the majority of the restaurants. And if they are concerned with whats locally "cool", it's still considered trendier to live out west, no matter how much downtown has improved.

The whole attitude "live urban DSM - or else" has almost become reprehensible, and it's old. You should step off your "booster" chair for once.

I'd recommend W DSM for this person among several other options. Grimes would NOT be one of them.

When I first moved to the metro, I had a townhome in W DSM. About half my immediate neighbors were all single professionals.

WDM would be a better option, but it's not like Grimes is so far away it really matters. you can easily experience the attributes of WDM, while still living in Grimes, especially if you're on the part of Grimes that borders Urbandale and Johnston, it's all connected.

Yea, I was driving up 141 today and didn't realize until now how integrated Grimes is with the rest of the immediate metro area. It is similar to Altoona in the sense that it has that older area with a small town feel too, ex: the old water tower and old main st.

Yeah, but Grimes has a better location. According to CapitalCityGuy, you'd be lucky to get running water in Grimes and it's so remote you might think you're in Siberia this time of year.

RonnieJonez actually has a good point here. The majority of single people in their 20's would probably be more fulfilled with easy access to the things Clive and WDM offer - malls, patio bars, dance clubs, chain restaurants than what downtown/Drake area/East Village/whatever offer, which is generally slightly more on the subcultural/bohemian side - "edgier" bars, coffee shops, ethnic restaurants, theater, live music, etc.

Some people would prefer Cheesecake Factory and Vieux Carre over say, Django and the Royal Mile.

maybe...although living near, for example , Ingersoll, Court Ave or 10th St is hardly "edgy". Regardless, until the original poster clarifies what exactly they are looking for, I think all we can do is guess at this point.
