Default Suburbs are much more diverse than a decade ago

City-Data recently updated their demographics statistics across the entire metro area for July 2009. Some of the cities are virtually unchanged, while others have changed dramatically. It's good to see that the Detroit Metro area may soon be able to shed that "most racially segregated metro area in the country" title when the new census numbers come out at the end of the year.

Suburbs that have become very diverse since 2000:

Farmington Hills
White alone - 53,799 (69.4%)
Black alone - 12,677 (16.4%)
Asian alone - 8,220 (10.6%)
Hispanic - 1,504 (1.9%)
Two or more races - 982 (1.3%)
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone - 316 (0.4%)

Novi
White alone - 38,769 (74.6%)
Asian alone - 7,365 (14.2%)
Black alone - 2,541 (4.9%)
Hispanic - 1,983 (3.8%)
Two or more races - 1,089 (2.1%)
Other race alone - 220 (0.4%)
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone - 21 (0.04%)

Troy
White alone - 60,567 (74.7%)
Asian alone - 13,348 (16.5%)
Black alone - 2,655 (3.3%)
Two or more races - 2,147 (2.6%)
Hispanic - 1,954 (2.4%)
Other race alone - 339 (0.4%)
American alone - 88 (0.1%)

Warren
White alone - 105,553 (79.9%)
Black alone - 15,977 (12.1%)
Asian alone - 4,703 (3.6%)
Two or more races - 2,733 (2.1%)
Hispanic - 2,097 (1.6%)
Other race alone - 641 (0.5%)
American alone - 445 (0.3%)

Rochester Hills
White alone - 59,060 (80.1%)
Asian alone - 9,367 (12.7%)
Hispanic - 2,208 (3.0%)
Black alone - 1,916 (2.6%)
Two or more races - 1,016 (1.4%)
Other race alone - 164 (0.2%)

Eastpointe
White alone - 22,998 (68.7%)
Black alone - 8,398 (25.1%)
Two or more races - 1,026 (3.1%)
Asian alone - 574 (1.7%)
Hispanic - 412 (1.2%)
American alone - 62 (0.2%)

Lincoln Park
White alone - 33,386 (79.4%)
Hispanic - 4,839 (11.5%)
Black alone - 2,440 (5.8%)
Two or more races - 948 (2.3%)
American alone - 204 (0.5%)
Asian alone - 194 (0.5%)
Other race alone - 54 (0.1%)

West Bloomfield Township
White alone - 56,419 (82.2%)
Black alone - 5,832 (8.5%)
Asian alone - 4,764 (6.9%)
Hispanic - 1,088 (1.6%)
Two or more races - 363 (0.5%)
American alone - 196 (0.3%)

Canton Township
White alone - 69,255 (70.6%)
Asian alone - 15,420 (15.7%)
Black alone - 6,082 (6.2%)
Hispanic - 4,771 (4.9%)
Two or more races - 1,700 (1.7%)
American alone - 610 (0.6%)
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone - 301 (0.3%)

Hamtramck (if considered a suburb)
White alone - 12,668 (54.7%)
Black alone - 5,451 (23.5%)
Asian alone - 4,471 (19.3%)
Two or more races - 307 (1.3%)
Hispanic - 209 (0.9%)
Other race alone - 58 (0.3%)

There are many suburbs throughout the metro area that have also remained virtually unchanged. All five of the Grosse Pointes have remained >90% White. Birmingham remains 95% White, and Livonia only fell to 91% White from 95% White. Other areas that have remained predominently White are Plymouth (Township), Northville (Township), and Milford (Township).

I, too, am happy to see the integration of metro Detroit. It's quite ridiculous to have "all white" or "all black" areas. I grew up in an all white area and had many misconceptions of people of other races. It wasn't until I was a young man and had the fortune of meeting people of different races that I realized (Duh!) that we are all more alike than we are different. I'd hate to think there are still children living today who will have to grow up with the same ignorance.

What does the "American alone" designation signify? American Indian?

They haven't updated all the cities yet. I can say with 100% certainty that Harper Woods is not 85% white. I'm guessing the numbers are more like Eastpointe's.

I'm also noticing a growing percentage of Asians, especially in Macomb county. Is there a reason Asians are moving into the Metro Detroit area?

I don't know if its a trend or not. But i live on a newer subdivision (about 3 to 4 years old). It is only about 60 houses and we have 5 indian families, 2 filipino, 5 middle eastern and 2 chinese that I know of. I think it may be more common in the newer areas.

I really don't think this is changing segregation. Yea Warren has a higher black population, but it's still segregated. The blacks live pretty much between 8 and 10 mile. I have friends in Warren and they say 696 is the new 8 Mile. Nothing is different. Hell even in Harper Woods it's segregated a bit. There's definitely a higher black population west of 94 than east.

I'll agree with you on the situation you brought up on Warren. Yes, Warren has a much higher African American population, but most reside south of I-696.

How about Sterling Heights though? Just a decade ago the massive city was 90% white, now it's 82% white. I don't think Sterling Heights' neighborhoods are segregated upon race.

Novi, Farmington Hills, and Troy are also not segregated according to neighborhood or street, these cities neighborhoods are mixed with all races.

Using the 2000 Census, I made a list of the most integrated cities/municipalities in the tri-county area. Contrary to what most people would consider an integrated city, namely 50% white/50% black, I used the actual ratio of the metropolitan area, which is 68.7% white/25.1% black/6.2 other. The cities are listed in order starting with those that most closely match this ratio.
