I'm a house appraiser and the bulk of my work for over 10 years has been in Detroit. The neighborhoods vary block by block with $200,000 houses a stones throw from $30,000 houses in some places. Estate houses in Boston-Edison, Palmer Woods, Palmer Park, and Indian Village are $200,000-500,000, but really nice houses in Rosedale Park, Warrendale, Grandmont, and East English Village can be had for a song. Newer subs like Victoria Park and Virginia Park Estates are also selling much lower than similar houses in subs in Oakland or Macomb Township cities. As far as the murder rate, the bulk of murder victims are young males who are associated with people who are criminals; then young females who usually are attached with males who either are criminals or who are associated with criminals and both groups are usually murdered by young people, usually males. So, if you don't hang around young people who are associated with crimes, then you probably have just as much chance being murdered in nearby upscale Birmingham as you are in Detroit.

Now THAT'S funny.

Are there no good jobs in Detroit?

What does a bachelors degree in business, with lots of experience in on Medicaid/health care get you in Detroit?
You could be a door gunner on a Checker cab!!

He's actually spot on correct, though. My stepdad is a retired Deputy Chief of Police for the city, and this is very much accurate based on his and many others' claims. Detroit's high murder rate is directly related to a group of large, but closely knit criminals that basically kill each other, and not Dick and Jane Suburbanite that happens to be inside the city. I've never, ever felt unsafe within city limits.

Typical demonization of the city is one of the main reasons of it's historical decline; specifically the baby boomer's generation and their parents came under a mass influx of paranoia resulting from a single Jewish or black family moving into the neighborhood, and the push continued outward and outward. Fast forward to today, and there sadly remains little left of Detroit but undereducated, impoverished people with an irresponsible government. It's deeply sad.

Thank goodness younger generations are calling bluffs and starting to support their local major city.

Unfortunately, yes, there are absolutely no jobs to be had. I've been out of work for over a year. I have no money to move away in search of work, and with no job, I'm not eligible for a personal loan to make the move happen. I've been generously supported by my mom who pays for my phone bill and gas money while I live under her roof and try (sometimes in vane it feels like) to find a job. I'm stuck in a vicious circle.

Just an example of how bad it is here right now, I recently interviewed for a menial office assistant position for a small glass block distribution company. The contractors there were being paid in practically pennies, and the owners weren't making much more. The owners were making (each) less than 30,000 a year, which amounts to less than $15 an hour. There were over 200 applicants for the job, and I heard through the grapevine that one of whom was an experienced AA of 20 years who formerly made around 50k a year, competing with everyone else for a job that scarcely paid $8 an hour, if that.

I love Michigan, but I've never seen things so bad. I hope to be out of here within a couple of months.

There is no WAY that you're anywhere near as likely to be a victim of a random homicide in Birmingham as you are in Detroit. No way.

It sounds like the movie Being There. Great old house surrounded by slums. Very sad. The growing global economy hasn't been good to a lot of Americans.

Jon, if you're anything like me, I'm guessing you're stuck in that "I'm educated but no one wants to hire me because I have no experience and I can't even get a job paying minimum wage that only requires a high school diploma because you have to have three years of experience even though it's an EASY job" rut?
