He's actually spot on correct, though. My stepdad is a retired Deputy Chief of Police for the city, and this is very much accurate based on his and many others' claims. Detroit's high murder rate is directly related to a group of large, but closely knit criminals that basically kill each other, and not Dick and Jane Suburbanite that happens to be inside the city. I've
never, ever felt unsafe within city limits.
Typical demonization of the city is one of the main reasons of it's historical decline; specifically the baby boomer's generation and their parents came under a mass influx of paranoia resulting from a single Jewish or black family moving into the neighborhood, and the push continued outward and outward. Fast forward to today, and there sadly remains little left of Detroit but undereducated, impoverished people with an irresponsible government. It's deeply sad.
Thank goodness younger generations are calling bluffs and starting to support their local major city.
Unfortunately, yes, there are absolutely no jobs to be had. I've been out of work for over a year. I have no money to move away in search of work, and with no job, I'm not eligible for a personal loan to make the move happen. I've been generously supported by my mom who pays for my phone bill and gas money while I live under her roof and try (sometimes in vane it feels like) to find a job. I'm stuck in a vicious circle.
Just an example of how bad it is here right now, I recently interviewed for a menial office assistant position for a small glass block distribution company. The contractors there were being paid in practically pennies, and the owners weren't making much more. The
owners were making (each) less than 30,000 a year, which amounts to less than $15 an hour. There were over 200 applicants for the job, and I heard through the grapevine that one of whom was an experienced AA of 20 years who formerly made around 50k a year, competing with everyone else for a job that scarcely paid $8 an hour, if that.
I love Michigan, but I've never seen things so bad. I hope to be out of here within a couple of months.
