If he's working in Shelby the best bet geographically is one of the hotels on m-59 near Utica, there's tons of options for dining, shopping and entertainment and it is perfectly safe and very nice area, there is also an extended stay hotel there.

The Sterling Inn isn't bad either but too many kids and families go there for the waterpark.

Don't forget we have some very nice casino hotels downtown, MGM Grand has beautiful rooms!
If I was traveling for business (which I do often) and wasn't from Detroit I would want to be in either Birmingham, it's Metro Detroit's most upscale area, or Downtown Rochester at Park Hotel. Very Pricey though... BUT, HOTWIRE shows 3.5 star hotel in troy birmingham area for $56/night which is most likely the Radisson Bloomfield Hills and that's only 5 minutes away from downtown Birmingham.

As a business traveler, mastering the art of hotwire is paramount if you have a moderate budget. I spent 200 nights in hotels in the past year and only stayed at 3.5 star and above, in the best areas of the cities I traveled to. And NEVER EVER spent more than $100/night, usually in the $60-80 range.

All of those areas you listed are safe. Stay away from Auburn as he'd be about an hour drive from Livonia & Novi. Farmington Hills or Famington might be fine.

Also if he gets a hotel in Novi, if he left early in the morning (like 630/7) he'd be fine to avoid traffic. Traffic starts getting crazy around 730/8 in the Novi/Farmington area and then around 430-630 in the evenings especially on 696 (the major expressway that would take him between Novi and Macomb)

Occassionally he may have to work south / south west of Detroit but so far it seems that will be rare.

I was looking at Candlewood because they have good accomodations for people who need to stay on for weeks at a time. There is one in Southfield and one in Warren. I think I found a few in a couple of other areas. Can't quite remember where - I think one was Farmington something or another and Auburn something or another. Any advice? Are there other hotels you would recommend. I am looking for clean and decent yet affordable (Holiday Inn Express quality but a little more affordable). $100 per night is too much when you are talking about 3 or more weeks.

Thanks for everyone for all of the replies. My husband ended up staying in the Warren area. He was actually very pleased with all of the areas he worked and traveled. He said it was nothing like he expected, nothing like the news lead us to believe. He liked the area and the people very much.

Oh, and he was so pleased to find Assumption Grotto in Detroit. My husband was able to start every morning off with Mass and he truly appreciated that. Any Catholics out there will want to visit Assumption Grotto, if in the area. The commute from Warren was very easy.

Ikea store? lol There are arrows on the ground to show you where to go... The best part of going to Ikea is seeing the people that are going the wrong way and look all confused... I mean, how simpler can it be? Follow the arrows.

Not sure. I ahve never found my way out of a Vegas Casino without leaving a trail of breadcrumbs or finding a guide.

Detroit doesn't have a lock on crime in the metro area; you can go to Roseville and get your purse stolen right out of your shopping cart, go to Eastland Center and lose your Caravan in the parking lot, go to Sterling Heights and get robbed at the ATM, have some bored teens driving around breaking out your car window in Troy, have the wheels stolen off your car in Harrison Township, get shot dead in a driveway in Royal Oak, and have the police tell you to move away when you call the police in Warren.
I used murder because the idiot swears your chances of living another day here is close to impossible smh

well don't come here then!

if something is abandoned chances are there aren't any people to harm you in the first damn place. NO ONE is begging you to come to the city.

I'm so sick and tired of these people who only "drive through" speaking on something you know NOTHING about. If its so damn scary don't come to Detroit
