Christmas tree arrives in Detroit | freep.com | Local News | Detroit Free Press

Although Christmas is still two months away, the tree went up today in Campus Martius! The summer fountain was shut down yesterday and the ice rink is almost all set up. If you haven't been down to Campus Martius in the winter, ice skating with family and friends is a lot of fun. Hot cocoa, baked treats, and holiday decorations galore! This year, the tree lighting event will be November 19th from 6-9 PM. Also, don't forget about America's Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 25th!

I'm glad they aren't calling it by that silly "Holiday Tree" moniker. It is what it is.

I really like that area, I used to work in the Comerica tower and went there often for lunch.

Yeah, but I think it changed names. Still pretty much the same place though.

I would prefer "Holiday Tree" to be honest. What does cutting down a tree and putting tinsel and garland on it have to do with the birth of Christ?

I agree. Lets put a 20 foot cross up and nail Kwame Kilpatrick to it. I guess that would be the death of Christ not the birth though.

It'll take more than nails to hold up that behemoth.

Okay! Okay! Okay! If we're going to get all politically correct will someone please explain why in the Sam Hill the tree in Campus Martius come from New Jersey and not Michigan?!? Afterall, Michigan is the third largest producer of Christmas trees in the nation. Heck, my mom has 80 acres of big pine trees; pretty sure she could have found one for them! I think I may have to boycott it this year.

Dang! I hope this is not prophetic of the new administration. One day as governor-elect, and already jobs are getting outsourced!

Why remove a tree from Michigan's beautiful scenery when we can take it from New Jersey?

Because it might come from the sunrise side; since you think it is all made of up dirty little towns with nothing to do, why would it bother you? Or are you willing to admit that perhaps people go to the sunrise side because to enjoy the beautiful scenery where it isn't all built up like Petosky or Traverse City?

The point is if we are going promote Michigan tourism and Michigan natural resources, we ought to put our best foot forward and promote Michigan-grown Christmas trees. I guess helping the farmer isn't part of the plan.
