COLEMAN YOUNG!
Bill Bonds (win) and Coleman (rascist?) used to fight with each other.
Bill Bonds won, due to Coleman's death (lol).

I'm not from Detroit and have never been there but as I heard it, "In 1945 Japan surrendered to the US and in 1976 Detroit surrendered to Tokyo.

Has the rest of the country been misinformed? Was it really racial or did the gas rationing, devastating recession, rising labor costs, and higher quality, more efficient and cheaper Japanese cars play a less critical role than most of us believe? Wasn't the city's economy pretty much based on auto manufacturing?

It's to the point where one can raise chickens in his/her backyard. Much of Detroit is now like rural Alabama.
Her story is kind of frightening, but very real. People spying on her with shotguns when she moved in.
As for the chickens, well, if this is an indication of anything, it is a sign that there is some potential to turn things around. If chickens can run around in a relatively urban setting, well, who know what new life can take form?

The other stuff was part of Detroit's problem. Newark went bad in the 1970's due to a combination of changing economics, racial tensions and other issues. In Detroit it just happened on a larger, slower scale.

I don't think Detroit surrendered to Tokyo. More like the rug was pulled out from under their feet. This business of 'outsourcing' began - big time, when Nixon got into office. The freemarketer's dream turned real. It was true also that Detroit didn't move quickly to stay on top by innovation. I remember way way back.. around 1960 or so.. as a kid I saw a gas turbine car out on the streets. I don't know if big oil put the squeeze on them.. but that was the end of it. Detroit could have done it.. they had the engineers and expertise to build much better cars. They just kept the old pattern and thought the money would just keep rolling in..

Yes, Motown was cars. Now it has nothing to offer. They left the poor in a lurch.. those with money fled to the suburbs.. and beyond.

Who has the money to enable a vast industry to step in..? We lost so much. America was left to sink. No great new things come out of America anymore. No medical cures.. no cutting edge science, no innovative anything.

AFAIK the United States is the leader in terms of medical research and universities.

It's just that the Blue Collar stuff is gone.

Of course, the residents of the more desirable areas were furious, and many of them decided to leave for the suburbs, where there was no inner city to speak of. In fact, my Grandparents left for this very reason. And in my opinion, the whole plan was ridiculous from the start. The only reason that the schools were "segregated" was that most neighborhoods were predominately one race, white or black. So the schools weren't segregated, they simply reflected upon the demographics of the neighborhood. And now, sadly, Detroit is doomed forever because of this outrageous policy.
here's some advice for detroit: STOP HAVING KIDS.

and that's my advice for every city in every state, for every citizen in this country. get fixed, use condoms, quit bringing in babies that you have no idea of how to take care of or raise. rich or poor, doesn't matter, you're not good parents and you're destroying everything. have a nice day.
