its very easy to say that gangs killed Detroit, but I am one to look even deeper into this problem. My mother is a RN and she visits people in the community. I use to go with her somtimes. The older people that have been living in Detroit all their lives say that ever since the Detroit Riot back in the day (i'm guessing this has to do with Martin Luther King's murder), Detroit has NEVER been the same.
Detroit was suppose to be the next New York, but happened was this......DRUGS! Drugs was heavily imported into Detroit back in the day in the 80's when the crack epidemic hit, Detroit was hit the hardest.
Now we have a whole generation (my mother's generation) of people who are drug attics with problems and not raising their children (my generation, Im 24). So now we have a cycle of illiterate people (and trust me, there are MANY ignorant people in Detroit because of a lack of education) running around.
You also have to look at the schools. What people see with money is a bunch of poor black folk with little education...so they are seen as worthess (unfortunately) and they won't bring any money into the city. After the problems with the motor company and people being laid off, "the motor city" now have thousands upon thousands of people not working adding to the dysfunction, crimes, violent murders, etc. Detroit is now a house to thousands of angry poor black people who are out of work..it doesn't take much for them to go off....it is really a sad thing actually.
What I see happening is white people pushing the black people out and then rebuilding the city for themselves. But they won't invest in it with the black people there. Does this ring a bell? (Hurricane Katrina?) Just something for people to chew on.

What part of "we don't want Detroit back" don't you understand? Detroit doesn't want us back either, just are money!
And last I heard, nobody is refusing to let black people return to New Orleans.

Sounds alright, but there is still a need to provide people with jobs. Give a person a house is one thing. Give a person a job can help even more.

Overdependence on one industry is just part of it, combined with the unwillingness to innovate. The Chrysler Turbine Car from what I hear is a good car. Why weren't there more built? The big three could have done better. That would have been a good car for the 1973 oil crisis, but no, there were none there for the consumers. Everyone says unions destroyed it. I don't blame the institution of the union. I blame the quality of the car declining and other things going on.

Actually black people pushed white people out with the riots during the 60s, and then rebuilt Detroit for themselves [to what it is today]. As for new orleans...Ive not heard anything about black people not being allowed back there, care to elaborate ?

I kinda read through some of the posts on this thread and I found it fascinating. The collapse of a major American city with some very interesting and informative suggestions/ideas as to how and why it happened.
Although it's impossible to blame all of Detroit's problems on anyone person, thing or event, the lack of effective leadership at a time when it was needed the most seems to be the one thing that hurt Detroit the most.
I find the style of architecture in your city very interesting to look at when compared to the stucco and chicken wire houses we build out here in the desert southwest. It's a crying dam shame whats happening to those beautiful old homes. Oh well.
