Someone posted this in a Michigan thread and I thought it might be of interest.

Map: U.S. Migration Flows | Pew Social & Demographic Trends

It shows that, for example, among states (& D.C.) that people move to, Arizona ranks 2nd while Michigan ranks 48th, but if you measure the number of people who are born in each state that still live there, Michigan ranks 6th while Arizona ranks 21st (albeit not by much percentage-wise.)

Wow, between 2005-2007, Michigan lost 203,000 people, which is equivalent to losing the entire city Grand Rapids, our State's second largest city. At the same time, Texas gained a total of 430,000, or the equivalent of a city the size of Cleveland, OH. Overall, the Midwest and Northeast really got battered. Many southern states gained enough in population to each build new mid-sized cities, while collectively, Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois lost ~530,000, or the equivalent of losing a city the size of Atlanta, GA.

Edit: I wonder what the 2010 census numbers will show. Michigan is still the 8th most populous state, but we could soon be eclipsed if we keep bleeding residents and places like Georgia and North Carolina keep gaining at a rate of 1,000,000+ per decade.

Which raises another question: Is it always better to be growing or are there advantages to shrinking and/or disadvantages to growing?

I love Michigan!
None of my family has left Michigan. Most of us would leave in January and return in April. We love all the seasons, we just wish winter would not last as long. Snow is beautiful and we get to wear our fur coats. We would really only want to be in the Sunbelt temporarily. Michigan is a great state we are close to so many states that are a short drive from here. There is nothing like "Pure Michigan".
