Tales of home, lost and found

Forty years ago today Detroit exploded, and the reverberations are still felt in deteriorating neighborhoods, declining population, racial isolation and the way the nation views the city and its suburbs.

A police raid gone wrong on an after-hours joint near 12th and Clairmount lit the fuse that ignited fires that would last five days, leave 43 people dead and millions of dollars in property destroyed.
