I'm a 22 year old male that just started working in Troy after college. I'm a little dismayed by the options in Royal Oak because they seem to be a lot of money and I don't think any of them are worth it. I do value the nightlife and that is basically the only appeal Royal Oak has for me. Looking at Rochester, it appears you can get more for your money. I have been looking right in the vicinity of the downtown area. Does the downtown of Rochester have younger people like myself frequenting the bars or should I just suck it up and spend the money for a place 3-4 miles from downtown Royal Oak?

Hey man,

I grew up and went to high school and college in Rochester, then moved here to downtown Royal Oak a few years ago. I can tell you that Royal Oak will definitely have a greater density of younger people due to the greater number of bars and more volumous nightlife down here. Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but there are deals to be found, and a lot closer than 3-4 miles away. I live 3 blocks from Main St. Here in RO and am paying under 700$ a month. Look in Craigslist, etc. Most of the properties you find down here will be flats/floors of houses rented out.

Rochester...is a bit different. A lot less bars (Gus O'Connors, Mr. B's, Main St., The Mills Brewery (my fav))...but its still pretty busy on Friday and Saturday nights downtown. There are some apartment complexes near there (I lived in Rochester Square), well within walking distance. There are a lot less younger people out but there is somewhat of a nightlife.

If Royal Oak is too expensive, why don't you look at Ferndale? Seriously, Ferndale has some great bars and restaurants in its downtown and lots of young people. It's not as fratboy as Royal Oak, but who really wants to be around that kind of nonsense 24/7 anyways? If you didn't work in Troy, I'd say get crazy and come down to Detroit.

What is your price range? Where are you living now? Some is finding a deal as prices in every area seem to vary a lot. Have you looked on craigslist and apartment guides? What about a roommate?
What about living in Troy? It again is not as young crowd like RO but you would be close to work. It probably is similar price as RO though.
Good luck

I don't know what kind of 22 year old you are. If you are married and looking to start your family, or spend the majority of your free time doing crossword puzzles alone with the lights turned off, maybe stay in Rochester or...what did you say, Clawson?

If you want to meet what we with blood in our veins call "women" I would check out Royal Oak, Ferndale and...well, that about sums it up for metro Detroit.

In closing, I wish I was 22 years old and moving to Royal Oak...some of those bars...good GRIEF...it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

Use your head son!

Get an apartment in Madison Heights. Somewhere in the 12 Mile/John R vicinity. Because it's not "Royal Oak" - you'll probably save 30-40% in rent - and you're still only 1-2 miles from everything and right at the 696/75 interchange to get anywhere fast.

My price range is $800 and that has to include utilities. I know that I can find a place but I'm just not happy with the quality for how much I have to spend. More than likely I need to just lower my standards. Thanks for the responses.

This might be risky or not but do you think it is wise to rent a two bedroom place and then use craigslist or some other form to find a roommate? I can afford to eat a month or two of a two bedroom lease if it's around a $1000 until I find a roommate

Most apartments will be utilities seperate. The cost of that will vary with season. Also some places don't pay for water or trash.
In terms of craigslist it can go either way I feel. That is with a roommate in general. Maybe you can find someone who will do a month to month roommate situation that way if it does not work out you are stuck.
