I prefer to rent self-contained suites in private homes that will have a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and separate entrance. My reasons: utilities are usually included and one needs only worry about the character of the family that lives in the rest of house (as opposed to 100 other apartment dwellers).

I have failed to find any source of listings for such rentals in Detroit Metro (my desired areas = Farmington Hills, Livonia, Novi, Northville, Plymouth, Canton).

Is this just not part of Detroit rental "culture"?

Very rare here, especially in the areas you mentioned above. Maybe Ann Arbor near Michigan. Then you have to deal with rowdy students as neighbors.

I am definitely interested in this type of living arrangement as well, as I may be leaving Texas and returning to Michigan, to one of the afore mentioned suburbs. Please DM me if anything like this becomes available in the future. Thanks, all.

While not an "in law" suite - it's more and more common to find single family homes that are being rented. Many of those include all utilities - so you get your fixed cost and also not living in a development with 257 other apartments. Do a search on Craigslist for "utilities included" in quotes and you'd be surprised how many you find. Same thing as an in-law apartment w/o having to even deal with a family.
