I don't want any city to fail (suburbs, on the other hand...... well, let's say that in my dream world, they get what they deserve), especially one I hold as near and dear as Detroit. It's a great city with a great heritage and a great people, but it needs help. Yet, people still knock it just for fun when it's down, like it's some kind of joy to further hurt the depressed city (trust me, it's a sad game that gets played a lot in Dayton, OH, too). I still think it's gonna come back soon, and when it does, we'll all be in awe.

I'm waiting for that day.

Most of us have been waiting a lifetime!

How many corrupt politicians do you need to see? How many times do you need to hear: Detroit, where the weak are killed and eaten?
Perhaps you've acceped this b/c you never lived anywhere else.
I've lived in 3 other states and the mention of Detoilet scares ppl 0ff.

A house converted to a hospital uh? Let me see, that would be Trumble General Hospital. I was also born there, but the funny part is I was raised on Fort and Junction, also lived on Livernois and Regular as a very young kid. I bet we know each other.

Coming from Duluth, Minnesota, where the population has gone from over 110,000 to now 84,000; I can commiserate on a smaller scale with what you're feeling. WE are looking at cities like Detroit to turn around so we can do the same. We have one of the most successful cities in the midwest just 150 miles south of here (Minneapolis) which, through no luck of our own, we now have everyone who can no longer afford Minneapolis rents coming to Duluth to get their hands on all the Section 8 houses that have been abandoned by those who got out of here once their jobs were gone. We know what it's like to see a city that once had 4 very active, large high schools now become a city that could very likely have one high school. It wasn't supposed to happen this way....we have an area of the city (Congdon Park) that once had more millionaires per capita than any area in the U.S. (mostly these were executives of the Iron Range mines who owned these mansions) - guess what they are now? TBI group homes. If it wasn't for that, nobody would be living in them. It is very tough to try to get progressive, forward-thinking businesspeople to come here when the first thing they see downtown are dilapitated buildings and condos that were 10 years too late - who is going to buy them now? They're empty.

I'm taking the long route here, but my point is this: in 1989, we were at the end of the first round of mass exodus of people. In 2009, the job situation (all over) is terrible, but this time nobody can afford to move. So like it or not, many of us are stuck where we are. With all of us in our respective cities, facing many of the same problems (and it is not much fun to be eclipsed by other cities in the same state that will receive much more federal funding while the cities that need it the most will not) we do have a lot of brainpower that is still in our cities.

I don't know what Detroit's solution is. I will let you know when I am there for a week (I'm running the marathon this year). I am one of those people who doesn't give up on certain places just because everyone else is; I find the city fascinating and I want to see these buildings and especially learn about the history of them. Not everyplace is going to be a Minneapolis, Phoenix, Chicago, Denver with brand-new sterile buildings with the highest educated people and that's okay. Maybe the problem is that we are remembering our cities for what they were rather than what they are now, taking that with some realistic attitude into what they could be next. I will let you know when I get there.

And the reason why I stopped by was for some suggestions on where I could visit (I'm planning on a few extra days downtown in Detroit) - but won't have a car as I will be catching a direct flight from Detroit back to Duluth after the marathon which is on October 18th. I'm excited to finally get out of here for a little bit!

After reading about Kwame's relationship with the Federal monitor, I can now say that, yes, I want Detroit to fail. No progress can be made until leadership is given to someone outside the city, the new elected leadership notwithstanding. That won't happen until Detroit "fails". The Vietnam War-era philosophy that "sometimes in order to save a village it becomes necessary to destroy it" has never been less counterituitive to me than when considering the recent city of Detroit.

In the sense that bandaid solutions and constantly rising taxes and stupider politicians, yes, because failure is inevitable.

It's too late to just hike the taxes and squeeze the working people and wasting their hard-earned money believing that this time it will work. Sometimes it's better to get things over with and then start with a clean slate.

Until they unload the ENTIRE city counsel, it will be the laughing stock for the rest of the nation. Every time I see them on TV, it reminds me of the bar scene in the original Star Wars movie.

Does one of the Star Wars bar characters scream something along the lines of "Shrek!"?

Sure does and he is the only one who speaks normal and has positive values to fix that mess. Leave the street slang and ebonics at home the rest of you. Time to accomplish something for your paycheck.

Shhhhhhhhhh.......

It's one of southeastern Michigan's best kept secret.

So many have left the D, and some have never lived there...
