Its simple. Ferndale has nightlife, a dowtown, etc. which is better for singles looking to mingle and hang out with other single people. (Its not really all gay). For those who are simply looking for quiet then yes, there are better areas than Ferndale.

Ferndale functions as an urban neighborhood with the same demographics as an eclectic urban neighborhoods with young people. But in metro Detroit, there are very few areas that are attractive inside the city (there are, but simply very few for a city its size) so the Woodwar corridor suburbs essentially stepped in to provide what young, unmarried people are looking for.

Hazel Park was where a lot of the hillbillies from the mountains down south who came up to work in the auto factories wound up, traditionally. Thus the 'Hazeltucky' tag.

Some of the poorer hipster types in the Royal Oak area had started moving in, though, when I lived in the area in the early-mid 2000s, just to save on rent.

I think Taylor, and the downriver area has/had an even greater reputation for that. Taylor even today still has a little of a rural feel. As if they wanted to continue their rural lifestyle in the suburbs.

HP doesn't really have any significant cultural attractions that easily come to mind. (Just thought of the horse race track!)
Woodward5
Hm...the Woodward Five - first I've heard of that term. They have a real community organization? Could it be expanded?
Of course HP always has been little more than residences with a smattering of support businesses - same with further east. Ferndale's bedroom communities?

Ferndale is a hipster haven full of people in indie rock bands, artist, a large gay community and a lot of college educated people. Hazel Park is the exact opposite of that, it's basically an extention of south Warren. So it's ridiculous to compare the two cities.

It's actually not that much of a stretch to compare them. Much of the housing stock in Ferndale is not all that nice and part of Ferndale sits within the Hazel Park district. Without Woodward and their downtown, Ferndale would not be much better than Hazel Park.

I really don't see that big of a difference between the two. I personally like Ferndale a little more... mostly because it feels like a more youthful place.

As I recall, downtown Ferndale is on Woodward/Nine Mile with nightlife and action.
Downtown Royal Oak is off-Woodward and has "action" both there and on Woodward.
So where is downtown Hazel Park and its "action"?

Uhh...9 Mile and John R? Kroger's can get pretty action-y.

If you ask me Hazel Park's got alot of potential for a downtown area north of Woodward Heights but alot of that is little home improvement stores, insurance places, plumbers...

Maybe Hazel Park could work towards making that stretch between Woodward Heights and 10 Mile on John R more like a downtown area, or at least add some shopping incentive. There are some empty buildings which could be filled in. But it wouldnt be quite as walkable or busy as Ferndale's downtown, with the wide lanes on John R and especially with the service drive cutting through the middle. But that doesn't mean it couldnt work.
