I lived in Blightmore from 62-72 and my parents moved out because of all the Alcoholics and low life's living around us. Most of the houses were cheap and falling apart. As an adult in 83 I rented a house in Brightmore and I can tell you I never felt safe. Trash ever where, kids running around with no shoes on, or just diapers, loud barking dogs all night. It seemed like every house was a crack house or a welfare collector. People smoking pot and drinking beer right on the streets. I can only imagine what it is like now. I go into Detroit very often but I avoid the Brightmoore area. If I moved back into the city it would be as far from the west side as I could get. There is no hope left for Brightmore,, I say plow it down and put up safe, affordable housing for those who want to live there, those homes are not worth saving. Diane

I can't believe I just read this post. I used to live across the street from a kid named Rodney Newsome. My name is Gene Crain and we lived on Westbrook between Fenkel and Outerdrive. I think Rodney was from Kentucky, and he had a sister named Cleda. I went back there a few times and the house is no longer there. Other kids I remember in the neiborhood were, Scott, Mary Ann, and Jim Payne. Unbelieveable.

It was Stopel Park, I used to go there all the time. I can't remember the bowling alley, I did go to the Irving theater for a dime and the library alot. Look on google maps and you can still see stopel park listed.

I grew up there. Left in the 80's. Attended Redford High which I heard is closing due to not enought students.

Viewing it from the yellow pages maps it still looks livable and in that area of the neighborhood houses look like they're actually lived in.
