Safe? Sketchy? It seems to be a fairly intact neighborhood. How's grocery shopping? Is it on the upswing? I hear there's a burgeoning Arab-American population moving in, true?

I wouldn't call it safe, but intact is accurate. The Yemeni population has been here since the '70s. Which groups are growing is always a matter of local debate. Every neighborhood is different. International grocery shopping is the best feature of the city.

How about the punker scene, is that still happening?

I'd like to know more, too, about residing in Hamtramck.

Ethnic foods (shopping and dining) are amazing and definitely worth the trip. Check out reviews on yelp.

Having lived in Livonia and Dearborn I was going to answer, but I can't stop laughing. Try Inkster.

That park by city hall between falcon and winfield looked pretty charming in the snow the other day. Hamtramck definitely seemed pretty safe walking through it during the day. Not really a super 'hip' area though, other than the Ooties storefront which looked a bit intriguing.

This article on Hamtramck was pretty cool. Good Middle Eastern restaurants on Conant - I've had some of the best lamb dishes there...

Wow, Hamtramck: We refresh visiting guide to one of our favorite neighborhoods

I have been there to eat and to see friends play in bands at semi-divy bars. It was fun and pleasant. Not particularly scary, but it is part of a run down city and there is wierdness going on. On place when I parked a guy offered to "watch my car" for $10. I gave him $5 and promised another $5 if he was still there watching and my car was unmolested. There were other things that were moderalely unnerving to suburbanites, but nothing particularly scary. I would call it edgy but fun. A good place for tough young people with a pioneering spirit (and a can of pepper spray).

It is much nicer than in the 1980s when I was into the punker scene and Hamtram was the place to punk. It was downright scray then, but I was pretty scary too. Punker scene is long gone. Now the bars are more classic rock. I saw some screamo bands, one techno/dubstep type band (I am not sure I can recognize dubstep, but I was told that is what it was).

Funny. But how much better is Hamtramck compared to Inskter?
