Hello everyone,

I just moved to Michigan for a new job near Farmington Hills, and I am currently in a temporary housing (I have about a month to find a new place) in West Bloomfield. Since I am a young male, I was hoping to live in a more modern setting (loft studio, etc.) but I guess that won't be so easy to find near Farmington Hills. From what little research I've done, it looks like Royal Oak area will suit my personal preference a bit better, but that seems a bit too far to commute (32 minutes according to the google map, not counting in the traffic).

Is Royal Oak/Troy/Fernandale too far to commute through traffics to Farmington Hills? How bad is the traffic on 696 during rush hour?

If I had to stick to Farmington Hills area, any place where it's more active and lively? West Bloomfield seems too quiet and old...

Thanks in advance all!

Royal Oak would be your best bet. There's some studio apartments in Southfield, but nothing lively nearby other than Northland Mall which I assume isn't what your looking for.

The commute could possibly get very bad occasionally, but if you're fine with a half hour commute then it ought to be no problem. There's always the options of using surface streets to by pass the freeway since the run roughly parallel.

Also, with winter time coming, your commute is going to be greatly longer. If a bad snow storm hits, it would be at least an hour to an hour and a half. Just letting you know in case your from a state with mild winters.

What area of Farmington Hills? Lofts though there may be some in Birmingham and Royal Oak are not the popular it seems in MI. What is your price range? I would not want to live in Southfield or near Northland Mall which is not very safe.
I used to do a similar commute for a few months from similar areas and I hated it. It was not during winter but summers bring construction and winter I can't even imagine how long and stressful. No way it is only going to be 32 min. I would say some winter days it may be 90. Now some people don't mind. I would rather live near work. Where are you from? In a rental you may want a garage or car port. This would be important to me.
You could look at Novi or Northville area too. It is still not as young though as RO and if you are planning on going to that area but don't want long drives you may want ot live in FH or WB which is more in the middle then Novi but Novi is closer to Ann Arbor which you may like
