Detroit, unlike a lot of other cities, used people's names for streets and not as many generic names as some other cities. If you were wondering where a lot of those names came from, you can find them from this site History Detroit 1701-2001

Some that are not listed that I would like to is Chalmers. If I had to guess, I would say it was named after Hugh Chalmers who started the Chalmers Motor Company. I'm also curious about Kercheval. The name sounds Greek to me, and before black bottom was replaced by Lafayette, Kercheval extended close to Greek town.

There was a family of Kerchevals who lived on the waterfront near where the downtown Post Office and Riverfront Condos are now. They were highly prominent people and had strong connections to Cass and other local figures during the middle 1800s. I haven't seen anything that directly states that the street was named after them, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the case.

This blog mentions a little more information specifically on Benjamin Kercheval (the person who made the family prominent).

Detour Through History: Who was Benjamin Kercheval?

I'd probably agree about Chalmers' origin.
