Good question. Where I live there is graffiti everywhere. It seems the parents of these children don't raise them very well and definitely don't teach them not to vandalize other peoples' property.

Usually where there is graffiti, there are plenty of other property crimes like theft.

Wonder if Diego Rivera has anything to do with it?

Going over these posts, I'm a bit shocked. Mexicantown is one of the most active neighborhoods in Detroit and I have never felt even remotely unsafe/uncomfortable/or "in somewhere ghetto" there, that's all crazy.

Cafe Con Leche! Clark Park! And the strip on Bagley near the pedestrian bridge has one of the best views of downtown

This is a good place to point out that Detroit is a very segregated region, and you might be a little surprised at just how bad race relations are here.

Ugh. Really hope this thread doesn't get misconstrued and devolve into an endless debate over nothing.

Cue, shaky youtube videos of area in question:

DRIVING AROUND THE SOUTHWEST SIDE OF DETROIT,MI. - YouTube

I hope this gives a better general view of the area. I would guess OP could still have someone check it out if this didn't suffice.

There is ghetto in mexican town, just get off the main street.

However ghetto is a really stupid term. I mean run down and dangerous, not really a ghetto.

Where exactly is the run down part of Mexican town (just out of curiosity, I'm not being incredulous or anything!)? It never seemed to me as dangerous-feeling as some other parts of the city, but my experience there is fairly limited. When I move back in June it's one of the neighborhoods I'm considering. LOVE Evie's. Mexicantown definitely at least has better Mexican food than New York in my opinion, and just steps (okay, realistically like ten flights of stairs) away from New Mexico's fare.

In a general sense, most Detroiters consider all of Detroit ghetto or "the hood". Of course except for the obvious areas like Palmer Park and Downtown. To define what it means specifically is a whole 'nother thread.
