If you are thinking of moving in the city...you could move downtown where the University students stay, in the waterfront high-end condos (like the harbortown condos), Indian Village (near the Grosse Pointes), Sherwood Forrest, Palmer Park, Palmer Woods, the University District, or North Rosedale (you can find a nice home for about 200k).

Or, if you want to live in the suburbs I would recommend any of the Bloomfields, Birmingham, or Troy. They have the BEST houses, and school systems in the state. There really aren't any other suburbs that I would recommend.

Let me tell you somthing, Try as hard as you can to forget about moving to detroit, This is the bigest advise you will ever ever and i mean everrrrr in your life. If you ask me why, because trust im the right person to ask that question.

well first: Bad Bad service, Slow police response. i swear i call them all the time from where i work liying to them that someone has a gun trying to kill someone just to test them and i swear to they showed up after 1 hour and half.

Second: Bad Bad roads the city dont give a dam about the roads, because they dont give a dam about the people there which is i dont blame them for it im not racist but that is the fact when it comes to 95% of the these people are reckless and loud neighbors and crimes and and so on you name it.

Third: Poor Poor service if you go to a district court in detroit down town god help you to get out of there after i would say million hours.

So take my advice and dont move there. The population is decreasing from that city and you should know why by now.

another advise go to the suburbs. Thank you.

Don't disagree with the rest of your post**, but don't make fake calls to the police - what are you thinking! You call them "all the time"? Just to test them? Please stop wasting their valuable time and tax payers money, if you are indeed telling the truth. The Detroit PD is woefully understaffed, they don't need fake calls.
Not to mention, I'm pretty sure you could get into trouble for doing this, and calls to emergency services are recorded along with the phone the call originated from.
You sound like you're still in school, so you're probably living with your parents. I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate this either.

Edited to say, I don't agree with this part:

** I'm assuming by "these people" you mean black people. You might not consider yourself racist, but from where I sit that looks like a racist - and ignorant - statement.

Overall Michigan is a great state i think. I hear alot of bad things about Detroit and IMO i dont really like the city but the suburbs are nice. But if your coming from Toronto you could take a look into another city. Look into Cleveland, Ohio. Its gone through so much change and there is alot going on here and alot of construction too. The unemployment rate is at 4.3%, one of the lowest in the Midwest and Northeast. Cleveland is on a roll. I think you should consider a move here. At least look into it.

I live in the Detroit suburbs and can't believe how much misinformation there is on these boards. Frankly, I'd use the info from this website followed by a personal visit. Also, the AAA travel guides are pretty good overviews of areas. Some cities have good visitor's packets available from the Visitors & Convention Bureau (Detroit's is bad). Also check out websites from local newspapers, e.g. www.detnews.com .

Talking We live in the City of Detroit.

Gee, folks. Our family has an annual income of 250K+ and we live in (gasp) the City of Detroit. We moved here from five acres in "prestigious" Oakland Township a few years back.

We have a loft in Midtown and really love it. So close to so many amenities that we can walk to fine restaurants, clubs, museums, music venues, etc. Driving is very easy because the streets aren't crowded. Living down here is a lot of fun.

I do acknowledge that the public schools are a major issue, but why would anyone assume that no one who has any money lives in the City? Not everyone likes a McMansion in Suburbia and a 45 minute commute to work.

I've been to Detroit a couple of times and I know some people that live in the metro area...I came close to relocating there but didn't. I'm from Mobile, Alabama and I love the upper Midwest and the cooler climate. I really liked the suburbs; I would not live in the city though. When I was there, I drove around the entire area even in the city down Mich. Ave. From my friends that live there and my own personal experiences, the Novi/Wixom area is nice as well as Sterling Heights and Utica. If you're extremely wealthy and want to live near Lake St. Clair, you might check out Grosse Pt. Woods. Avoid areas like River Rouge and Inkster. Dearborn and Southgate areas are older blue-collar type neighborhoods, not that that's bad, that's just the way it is. Livonia is a popular middle class area. One major reason I didn't move there was the commute. To live in the type of area I wanted meant a 30 mile commute to work in the snow and all that mess with horrible jaw-jarring roads. The potential workplace was located in Dearborn and I wanted to live in the Novi/Wixom area.

As for things to do, in downtown you have Greektown...a collection of bars and restaurants that are pretty popular. Hart Plaza has special events going on every now and then from what I hear--and you can ice skate there in the winter. Don't forget the January auto show, which is a blast or the MGM casino downtown. There's also Belle Isle....not much to do there really. It's got an aquarium, a race track, and deer there. After I went, someone was shocked that I did.....so maybe it's not a safe place (I didn't go at night), but I wanted to check the whole city out when I went, good and bad. Across the border, you have Windsor that has more bars and restaurants.

It all depends on your taste as to where to live, your commute time to work, and your income level. If you let people know generally what you're looking for, the locals on here and people like me that have visited and enjoy the city and have a little knowledge of it can help you more.

I was born and raised in the Detroit Metro area, left in 81 and know that I will never return to the area to live. Detroit itself is a sewer. The last time I was back (for a funeral) I drove down Michigan Ave and right past Wyoming heading east, I actually watched a marked police car make a drug deal. When I tried to report it I was given all kind of **** because I "wasn't from around there" and "didn't understand" how things work in the city. Yeah, imagine that., I guess the time I spent in Tokyo, Seattle, Chicago, Portland, St Louis, New Orleans and San Diego renders me unqualified to know how things work in “the city”. I know corruption exists in all those places as well, but I couldn’t in my wildest imagination believe that a cop would have that kind of gall to make a drug purchase in the open like the one I witnessed.

Went down to Greektown another night and there were more cops on the street than diners in the restaurants. As we (myself and three other adult males) were leaving one of the cops suggested that as we drove away that we blow through the stop lights and stop signs because there had been so many carjackings...HE RECOMMENDED WE BREAK THE LAW FOR OUR OWN SAFETY!!!!

If you really want to move to Detroit my only advice is do one of two things, consider ANY alternative besides Detroit or if you must move there, make sure you are an accurate shot and buy the best gun you can afford, you'll need it.

Detroit itself is a dump, but the suburbs are fine.
I can't believe that unemployment in Cleveland metro is really that much lower than in Detroit metro. Before I moved back to Detroit last year, I looked for a different job in NE Ohio and pickings were slim.

I was in Indianapolis last night. Indiana is a promising prospect for anyone wanting to move to the upper Midwest.
