I am in the beauty industry and moved to Lansing to work at a medical spa and realize that the beauty industry is stronger closer to Detroit. Can you please let me know what are the safest suburbs for a single, female, african american woman in upper 30s and no kids? I am looking for a safe and diverse area, with access to as much as possible.
I am used to living in bigger cities including Atlanta and Philadelphia suburbs. Any advice would be appreciated!

Roseville, Fraser and Eastpointe ought to be good. There's a lot of small bungalows and ranches in that area and it's relatively safe and fairly diverse.

Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, and Ferndale have similar sized homes but are more expensive and have more younger people the the suburbs mentioned above. Though, it's likely to be busier in terms of overall traffic.

Southfield might be good to check out as well though I'm unsure of how much stock of small housing they have for a single person. You might have to look into apartments (if apartments weren't your original considerations). Southfield is majority African American though and has a wide age group.

Why not Detroit itself? Compared to Atlanta and Philly, Detroit is wide open. There are some great lofts and brown-stones along Woodward. Doesn't The city council president live along there somewhere?

Do you know where you might be working? That info could help because the suburbs are so wide spread. Price range would help also. Good luck, there are many nice areas to choose from!

I agree with this. Almost all the suburbs are reasonably safe (compared with Detroit). Has more to do with how much you are willing and able to spend. Not too many beauty spas in my area; sounds more like an Oakland County thing.

The best place for you to live would be right next door to detroitlove, who thinks that Detroiters are moving in droves to Atlanta.

It might be wise to locate within easy reach of your job. Driving across town could get old imo.
