Hi. I have accepted a position at Beaumont in R.O. Need to get housing set up for my family and myself. Would ideally like to be within an hours commute of the hospital. Coming from rural northern Michigan I am completely ignorant of the housing situation and schools there. Any help would be appreciated. I am considering an apartment for a short time until we can find a house. The fam will likely move up at the end of the school year.

Royal Oak and Berkley (the adjacent town) actually have pretty good schools. The advantage there is that you won't need a long commute and can spend more time with your family.

Troy and North Farmington have marginally better schools but the commute will be longer.

Depending on your budget, Troy would be a good place to live with pretty good schools.

Rochester, Grosse Pointe or Birmingham would be the most comparable to downtown Petoskey - easiest transition for the kids. All very doable commutes to Beaumont and less than 30 minutes for all.

Thanks for the info. We have decided that I will get an apartment for myself for 6 months and then will find housing for the family. Will be looking at the 3 cities that you listed. My oldest said he didn't want to move. :-( Really hoping this is a smooth transition for all.

I agree about renting first but I went to Birmingham schools and if I had children I would want them to attend them. Im not familiar with the other school districts.I know it is hard for kids to move but the schools offer a lot of after school activities and with the summer maybe getting them in a summer camp through even the school district. I'm not sure if it is the same where you are living now but for ex I had a friend who lived in Bloomfield Hills who went to Birmingham schools. I actually lived closer to WB schools but went to Birmingham.
Many homes in the area people are renting so you may want to look into that as well.
Good luck with the transition

In RO you are pretty centrally located for work - best bet because of traffic is to stay close. Many good options and its great to rent first so you can see what appeals to you. Start by investigating good schools and pic location on that and the drive.....
