Oakland County tends to be more expensive for similar sized homes although the taxes are about the same to a little cheaper. Taxes tend to be cheaper by only a few hundred dollars to maybe one or two thousand annually but generally, it's not that big of a difference.

You can estimate potential taxes here: https://treas-secure.state.mi.us/pte...testimator.asp

University-Liggett is much higher but realy I was just using them as an example of a private school. Most of the people on my street sent their kids to Catholic schools and are happy knowing that they have a more direct involvment in their child's education. Clearly someone spending 800,000 to 1,200,000 on a house can afford to invest around 150,000 in their child's education.
I was using the an elite private school for my example. Catholic schools test scores are more comparable to Cass Tech or Renaissance.

But even 150k per kid adds up pretty quickly. Even 15k a year is money that can't be recouped when you sell your home.

LOL. The mental image of Orthodox Jews, first-generation Hispanics & white hipsters getting together to play cards is quite hilarious. I'd pay to see that.

Cass Tech ACT Composite - 21 Graduation Rate 100 College Attendance 68
Renaisance - 21.3 99 74
Detroit Central Catholic - 26 100 97
U of D Jesuit - 26.5 100 98
Although the Cass and Renaisance students may graduate at similar levels they are very different schools. Also not to be racist but I would not feel comfortable with my kids at a school where they are the only white person.

Choose what you will. Being the only black person in a rooms feels vaguely like being the only white person I'd imagine. I think it'd be harder to be the only black person walking into ULS than walking into Cass.

Taxes in Oakland County are significantly cheaper than taxes in the Pointes.

Maybe you're saying they're similar because home prices are much higher in the affluent parts of Oakland, but apples-to-apples, taxes are much lower in Oakland.

You honestly live in the Pointes? Are you a new resident?

I find your comments strange, in that you're completely unaware in terms of who attends GP Schools.

The fact is that much of Harper Woods attends Grosse Pointe schools. In fact, one of the GP Schools is actually in Harper Woods.

St. Clare is a high poverty Catholic school bordering Detroit. It probably isn't an option for non-Catholics, and no way does it compare to GP Schools.

Most of the students attending St. Clare are probably from Detroit, given that it's mostly African American, and right on the border.

On further reflection- it's hard for that sentiment of not wanting your kids to be the only white kid in school. No one ever worries about the only Black kid in a school. Don't fall prey to the hegemonic ideal. Reading between the lines- I assume you worry about the white kid's safety at an all black school, but not about the black kid's safety (or acceptance) at an all white school.

Why wouldn't you feel comfortable? What are the hidden worries?

Would a black person feel comfortable having their child be one of few or the only child at an elite prep school?

What words, sentiments, feelings, preconceived notions hide behind the word comfortable?

As a middle schooler through high school. I attended a large inner city school. It was in another state, not Michigan.
It was frightening at times, as there were very different cultural norms, as well as some darned angry poor kids. Some of them were loud and abusive. Some were very nice.
I did well enough, but anxiety certainly detracted from my educational experience, especially when I was in the earlier grades. I had developed a thick skin by my later teens and felt much less vulnerable.

At times it was very uncomfortable.
