Detroit has a long history of manufacturing — cars, steel, even popcorn.

Now, the city is home to a facility devoted to the production of an item not made at this scale in the U.S. for decades: the wristwatch.

The Dallas-based Shinola Company is manufacturing its Shinola brand of watches in Detroit.

Shinola officials say this year's watch production target is 45,000, to be sold online, at flagship stores in Detroit and New York and at fashion and jewelry retailers and department stores nationwide.

Early returns are positive. Shinola sold a limited-edition round of 2,500 watches in less than a week.

Same name. Different company.

Well, specifically, the wristwatch company bought the name from the hair wax company.

Isn't Shinola shoe polish? I guess it would work for that though.

This company is a story in itself. They are selling out all their timepiece production runs - mostly limited editions so far, imo a great marketing strategy which seems to be working. Lots of people can afford a $500 watch, and they don't have to stop there. Maybe high-end manufacturing like this with upper-crust marketing is one solution to globalization and outsourcing. The diversification of Detroit industry is finally beginning?

Ya know, people often forget or don't even know that prior to becoming a big automotive manufacturing city, Detroit used to manufacture a whole variety of products. Of course, no one company would have the thousands of workers that an auto plant would have, but then on the flip side there was hundreds of companies for people to work at.

I would love to see a Detroit with many companies like Shinola and I actually wish the city would encourage it more. They also have some pretty cool ads.

I popped into to the store on Friday to see the grand opening - was good to see all the hustle/bustle. The watches are out of my price range for what I'd consider a prudent purchase- but I'm glad to see them doing well. This is a perfect example of selling a product to the West/Eastern Coast and having that money support jobs and retail in Detroit. In multiple Detroit locations. We need 50 more of these companies. I naturally strolled over to Great Lakes Brewing Company for a coffee and then Whole Foods for a pastry/energy drink - more in line with my spending.

Seems to me this should have been going on continually, even with the presence of the auto industry, and with no need to reclaim dilapidated buildings with their great architecture for purposes like this. Not exactly sure why it didn't happen. Lack of vision? Complacency? Clueless leadership?
Yeah, prosperity from startups like this has to bleed off into the neighborhoods - like it did in the past. And what I like about this - it is manufacturing with pride. I still believe America and the "rust belt" needs it and can find some way to do it.

So what is the price range? (She asked nervously.)

Feel free to pick up a bag of Better Made cheese popcorn while you're shopping. Or a Pewabic Pig. Maybe some Velvet peanut butter. Those are much more affordable and made in Detroit....
