On a $12 haircut, I would give $3.

$3 for every 15 minutes spent cutting hair - That's $12/hr in tips + base - more than generous.

I have no idea what my haircut costs. I just give my cutter(female, same one for 7 yrs. now) $25.00 and make another appointment. If the costs ever go up I'll know it, and raise my payment.

It's not the cost of the haircut, it is, what is looking nice worth?

OK, I use Quik Cuts because I don't like a lot of needless fuss and don't enjoy sitting in a barber's chair (and the insincere chatter that goes with it ).
I figure $2 per cut x 15 cuts per day (weekly avg considering slow times?) = $150 per week = about $600 mo. extra income from tips. Of course taxes will eat into this. Too much or too little?

Tip 20% at least, even if the person is a barber, or the owner of the shop. The whole don't tip the owner rule went out with 10 cent cigars.

You should factor the tip into the cost. If you can't afford the tip, you can't afford the haircut.

However, if the haircut sucks, complain to the owner and don't tip and either let the person fix it or find a new one.

Just a very small amount of money can make the difference between a cheap and generous tip and can make or break someone's day.

When Tipping I look back to my days as a pizza delivery guy and my short stint as a waiter. Is it a tip that woudl make me happy? Would I be inclined to bust my tail for them next time they come in? Would I be looking for someone else to take their table/delivery because they are cheap a$$e$? Would I serve/deliver them last and focus on others who will or may tip better?

Of course it depends on your financial situation too. Back when we made tons of money, I used to enjoy once in a while leaving a $100 tip for a $14 meal, or a $40 tip on a $25 haircut. I could afford it, they needed the money and it was nice to be appreciated, but it was not a "what can I get for this" thing. I did not care if I never saw them again. I know what a $100 tip would have done for me during those times, I enjoy knowing I can spread some cheer once in a while. Right now I am not going to give someone a $100 tip an then tell my son he cannot play soccer this year becasue we cannot afford the $100 fee. It just depends on how things are going. When I am not doing as well, homefully someone else who is doign better will take up the slack when I am doing well, I try to tip higher to make up for those who tip low.

My haircuts are $20 and I give the barber, who owns the shop with his wife, $25.

For years I never thought of tipping the barber. Then I married my late wife, and she mentioned it once -- said I should tip. I have since then, 20+ years ago.

So for a $12 haircut you give them $1.20? Or for a $7.50 haircut (if you can find one) you tip 75 cents?

I would think it might be better to give no tip.
