Not really. I think I've both criticized and praised what I've seen about Detroit... Maybe since I disagree with YOUR views, esp my supporting affirmative action (egad, the Prof must be a racist!) probably gets under your skin... sorry.

Its funny that everytime I go out in Detroit I see white people all over the place!! Eating, shopping, just out having a good time!! Maybe all of you stubborn racist that love to bash Detroit should come and see for yourselve's!! We got great sports venues, beautiful theatre, and some world class museums!! What more could you want from a city!! I love Detroit!!!!!!!
Detroit has such a high crime rate with a low population its sickening. The biggest problem that plagues the city is the Detroit mentality that seems to overcome the residents. They want welfare, they dont want to work and they'll get what they want for however way they can achieve it. When you see how downright BAD the city is from the police standpoint, you would not be saying how nice the city is.

When did I ever imply that it was reasonable to infer that someone was a racist just because they supported AA?

As far as what's killing Detroit...Here's another one: If it weren't for Detroit's underground economy of drugs, fraud, outright larceny and political corruption, it would be in even worse shape than it already is. If people who made a (very good) living in Detroit via the "alternative economy" actually paid taxes on their income, the Detroit public schools might even be able to afford toilet paper.

<<<...and no matter where a person lives, you cant completely dodge everything. The air quality/heat/crime rates/cost of living.>>>

I moved from MI to Cottonwood AZ, after being born and raised in "Detroit" , the Northend, I was thinking that ooooh I would be safe, small town with no problems but found that the kids here in Cottonwood have nothing to do and no recreational facilities are being built well the first one this year...however the kids are on Meth and the parents have their head buried deeply in the ground saying ...oh no not my kid...but figures and drug busts don't lie. So I repeat, <<....and no matter where a person lives, you cant completely dodge everything. The air quality/heat/crime rates/cost of living.>>

What went wrong? Why isn't this huge and formerly great city not made the pride and joy of the state the way, say, MSU and U-M are?
You're kidding, right? Don't you know how much state and federal money was POURED into Detroit during the 70s and 80s, to "revitalize" the city? The Ren Cen, Hart Plaza, that area had TONS of money put into it, tax credits, enterprize zones, the People Mover... if it wasn't for state and federal money Detroit would be completely empty today.

That's part of the problem with the "revitalization" going on now... so much more has happened in the past, to no avail. Why will it work this time, when it didn't work before?

I moved from Detroit, 10 miles west. In Detroit, I was the victim of several burglaries and several more attempts, gang grafitti all over the garage, shots fired within a 6 block radius almost every night and someone trying to poison my dog. That was in the span of about 3 years, in Warrendale. 10 plus years in the suburbs (and not even one of the "top" suburbs), and I have great neighbors (of several racial and ethnic backgrounds) and no burglaries, gang grafitti, etc. The only thing they complain about here are a few loud Harleys that go down the street at 3:00am, but I happen to like the way they sound.

The public schools aren't what they used to be, but they're not Cody or Mumford either. Doesn't matter to me anyway, as I send my kids to private schools.

I am French and I plan to come working in Detroit for one or two years. I have one question : if I leave a restaurant at 10 pm with my wife, should I walk quietly to my car, or run as fast as I can?!

Don't you realize how much things have improved? I remember when kids were spraying so many bullets that there was a shooting every week, at least!
You French are very sneaky. I can see you're trying to trick us. Of course, the correct answer is you take a cab because someone else took your car before you were halfway through the appetizer.

He was joking...

Many of the fine restaurants are in the suburbs, not in the city, and you will be fine. If you go downtown, park close. Park in a parking garage... don't park on a side street somewhere. Greektown is ok, lots of police patrolling it. Downtown is ok. The thing to remember is that the bad areas are often a block off from the good areas, so getting lost is not a good idea.
