to the REDWINGSFAN, i don't like eminem and all of that rap stuff. I just thought I would like Detroit for some reason. Oh well, I guess the population will continue to dwindle until Detroit is no more. Thanks for the info everyone.

Why are you facinated by detroit??6 or 7 years ago i went to concert at the palace our hotel-which was 190.00 a night - was so disgusting we decided to drive home instead of staying the night even though we still had to pay for it.There is so much crime ajnd filth.I hate to say this seeings how i have lived in michigan most of my life but i would definitly look into some other cities. What about east lansing,Indianapolis,Grand rapids ???are you planning on moving for school?a job or what??You will need to investigate the cost of living and find a good job.I know you do not want to hear this but from experience i can say listen to your mom.
Good luck

The Palace is a half hour north of down town Detroit....part of the Metro area
PALACE=Auburn Hills=well-to-do neighborhood
My question is did you stay at a hotel in Detroit or Auburn Hills?

I'm 17 also and I've lived my whole life in a town about 15 miles west of Detroit. I work in Detroit though, and I've been there tons of times, and I must stay it still scares the crap out of me. I'd have to say everyone else who's posted is right on about racism, rudeness, etc. It's usually not a very happy place.
There are some nice areas, but they're usually like an oasis kind of in an area with very high crime.

You can still come to Detroit, just live in a burb like most everyone else. And trust me, looking at pictures of decay is much more....enjoyable? ...than standing next to the real thing. After all, we all like looking at train wrecks but nobody wants to be in one.
If you do come, the first stop on your tour should be the Detroit Central Train Station. I pass it daily on my commute. It is something to behold when you're up close to it.

Detroit
I'd like to see Detroit prosper too... but for that to happen 1/5 (20%) of Detroit's population would have to vanish into thin air... because as long as they're there (I estimate 20% of D's pop. being either rude/racist, drug addicted or criminal) Detroit has no chance of prospering.
The suburbs are alright, but you sound like you are more of an "urban" person (in love with the architecture, city life, etc...), i'm a little like that too. I recommend either Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, or (perhaps) Ferndale. If you want to move into Detroit, though, then good for you! I hope more people do move there... but wait until you're older. I don't see a 17yr old doing well... please don't take offense, but I think Detroiter's would eat a 17yr old alive.

I really can't believe all of the negative people on this forum, and I fail to understand why everyone has such a complete negative view of the city. It may not be the most beautiful place in the world, but I know plenty of people from all over the country who have moved here and been happy.
I get the feeling that most of the people posting have not spent much time in the city, and those of you who have, have not given Detroit enough of a chance.
I have a beautiful downtown apartment with a view, safe and secure parking, and plenty of bars, restaraunts and a few shops within walking distance. I have never been the victim of a crime (not that it doesn't happen), and my life has greatly improved since moving here from Kalamazoo.
I really don't know where to begin with all the hate I see spewed toward detroiters on this forum (supposedly we are the rude people).
Detroit is far from Utopia, but I would reccomend it for anyone to visit.
And to the Moderator cut: personal people that say that Detroit Would eat a 17 year old alive, Tell that to the tens of thousands of students who attend Wayne State University.

Moderator cut: personal I disagree with you.
By the way, the downtown area & the Wayne State University area consists of a completely different atmosphere than what most here are talking about. Most of the Wayne State students have either lived in Detroit their entire lives or live in the suburbs and commute. I go to Wayne State, the Art Museum, Comerica Park, and the Hockeytown Cafe all the time - it doesn't mean i'd freely travel into the other 90% of Detroit on a walk one day. You can lie if you want - but that's not going to help Detroit. People realize it's crime rates are dangerously high and what you have to say about your downtown home being located in the safest part of Detroit isn't going to change people's opinions.
And in case you missed it, c1schnei, I did say this: "If you want to move into Detroit, though, then good for you! I hope more people do move there... " at least I was encouraging him to, one day, move to Detroit. That's more than most would do.

You say things like
"detroiters would eat a 17 year old alive."
And throw out a number of "statistics" like
"1/5 (20%) of Detroit's population would have to vanish into thin air... because as long as they're there (I estimate 20% of D's pop. being either rude/racist, drug addicted or criminal)" 90% of the city is "unsafe" blah blah blah. "
You have a real grasp of numbers, I can tell, but living downtown is safe and exciting. I never advocated for this guy to move to an area in the 90th "unsafe percential" that you are referring to, nor do I think a neighborhood would have what a young dude was looking for.
I firmly believe that people's perceptions of Detroit lag behind the actual progress that has been made.
Just trying to interject some positive perspective on this bash-fest, and as a person who lives here, I feel like I am in a better position to provide advice about the city than people whe "visit Hockeytown" every once in a while. And you never responded to my actual answer that there are thousands of kids who attend Wayne State University without being "eaten alive."
Where are some of the Detroit-lovers on this forum? Until they arrive this place will be a bastion of misinformation and hate.
Thanks,
Chris
