Should I come to Detroit (Warren, Royal Oak: homes, rent, jobs)

I lived in Detroit for several years and never had a problem. I have a sister raising a family in Detroit and they have not had any problems. You need to be smart no matter where you go regardless of the city. IF you put yourself in a dark alley late at night in any city you can problems. Stay in the public and in areas of activity and you are ok. Just use common sense.
I live in Northern Michigan and we have all the same stuff happen up here. You need to use your head and common sense.

I say, sure come to Detroit and see for yourself. As others have said, there are bad areas in every city. But even in the public areas you have to keep saying "NO, I don't have a cigarette you can have".
I have been downtown many, many times for various reasons and never had been a victim of a crime.
Hey, at least it's is no longer the "Murder Capital".

I am 17 years old and i live just a couple blocks outside of Detroit, and have lived here my whole life. Personally i am extremely offended by all of the people who have only visited Detroit and feel that it is a "bad" or "disguisting" city. Of course there is litter in the street, and abandoned houses you see that anywhere you go. If you truly appreciate Detroit like most who actually live here you don't look at the "bad" things, what about all the great things Detroit has to offer? There is dozens of beautiful attractions Detroit has also. The whole downtown atmosphere is amazing! Most likely one of the reasons why all of you that have thought that Detroit is a "bad" city would probably be because you have a preconceived notion all of the "bad" things that happen here before you came so all of those things that you heard about were all that you recognized and didn't stop and admire the D.I.A, Greektown, The Motown Musical Museum, Ford Field, Comerica Park, The Ambassador Bridge,etc. What about New York you look at the statistics of crime,murder,rape,theft,and assault and New York practically doubles Detroit, but that doesn't mean New York isn't a beautiful city with dozens of great attractions. My advice to you from living here and experiencing Detroit would be to come and enjoy the city, don't count how many abandonded buildings there are but appreciate the museums and everythings else, but bring a friend because the more people you have the more fun Detroit is. I hope you come and visit the city!!

I lived in southwest Detroit and i understand Detroit has pockets worthy of visiting as far as Detroit entertainment/nightlife goes but i tell you what,even the blacks who spent most of their lives in Detroit are moving out. What does that tell you.

Yeah, there moving out alright. That's why 80% of the city is African American, the city. I think somebody else has moved out.

Personally i think that was one of the stupidest comments i've heard on this whole thing, who cares if AFRICAN AMERICANS are moving out of the city.... people move all the time for more reasons than because they don't like the city. I don't think you've asked a majority of people who have moved out of the city why they moved.. I really don't understand the point to what you said..?

NYC has less crime than Detroit. Detroit has about 900,000 people, while NYC has about 8.2 million.
DETROIT - 354 murders recorded in 2005.
NYC - 539 murders recorded in 2005.
If you double the population of Detroit, Which would be around 1.8 million people, there would be 708 murders, way more than NYC.

Nonetheless, on forums, people will post their opinions. You can't make your decisions off of someone else's opinion. If you want to move out there, I say go for it. Experience something yourself. Do research yourself about the city and it's crime problems. The downtown is currently going through a renovation, so that might add to the reason you want to move there. Oakland County is in the metro Detroit area, and is one of the wealthiest counties in the country, so you know that there will be nice places to live there if you don't want to live in the city (the cost will be a little more expensive though). But whatever your choice, it's your choice, so don't let others decide things for you.

The irony in these posts is the complaining about the "Every Man For Themselves" attitude of a city - while only being concerned about what the city offers YOURSELF! It causes me to consider the famous "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country" speech by JFK.

One post notes that as soon as minorities move in - the whites are out. Yet we discourage others from moving in to make it a different place. Is this not secular humanism in it's rawest form?

Safety is a concern, but I'm looking to move to a place where I can make a difference and not just be comfortable. People can be redeemed and entire communities can be changed - but not with the attitude I see in some of these posts. Those attitudes are what leads to the crap outlined about Detroit.

The worst thing about Detroit is lack of leadership. And if all people had this "avoid the ugliness" mentality - the city will continue to have a leadership vacuum and never recover.

Might I also mention... though Detroit and it's neighbor Flint top the lists in crime rates. A place in-between (Troy) is at the top of the list for lowest crime in America. Don't paint the entire surrounding area or the state of Michigan with such broad strokes - that's ignorance.

For those who like to leave and curse the place - THANK YOU - for taking your ugliness out of the picture. Your contributions to the "rudeness" of the town will not be missed.
