Downtown is beautiful these days. You should be fine walking. Buses run frequently on Woodward, so you might consider riding in one or both directions. Be as cautious as you would be in any large city.
It is hard to get to most suburbs without a car. Taxis are expensive. If you really want to see Detroit, consider riding the buses. It is a good way to learn about the city.
Mexicantown and Greektown are fun areas in Detroit. You also might enjoy a visit to Hamtramck. It is one of the most diverse and densely populated places in the country. Most people in the region know Hamtramck for Polish restaurants and bakeries. There are too many things to see to get to them all. What sort of things are you interested in?

Hi, I have always wanted to move to Detroit, so I want to come and check it out. See if I would like it. I thought about attending Wayne State. Heard it is a nice college.
I bought my ticket last night, but now I am a little hesitant to come. I am afraid it might be a little too dangerous. I want to walk around and see what the city is like ,but not have to worry about getting messed with. I have never been to a city like Detroit before. Not sure what to expect.
Thanks,
Daniel True

Education and Fun on Campus.
Mike...Mike. You must have lived in Royal Oak all your life. Because Wayne State is in the Cass Corridor area, and that's where most Black and White crackheads live. However its one of the most safe areas in the entire city.
Why? Because there is the Wayne State Police,The Detroit Police, and other unmarked law enforcement groups patroling Wayne State. The University is joined by the New Center area on the North. Interstate 75 on the Southend. Woodward Avenue on the East, and John C Lodge on the West. Daniel.T enroll in Wayne State dude, and enjoy the weekend in one of the on campus hangouts. There is the Traffic Jam on Second avenue,Alvin's on Cass, and the Beer factory on W.Canfield at Second. Have a goodtime, and go for the degree of your choice. Downtown there is Hockeytown saloon & the State theatre a block from each other, and they both be rocking on the weekends too.

That's good to know that you are one of them ______ who visit one of the non pan handling areas in downtown Detroit. How late do you stay when you visit downtown? You know yourself alots of you suburb people usually leave Detroit before it gets to late, and I have always wondered what is the reason? To be honest Moving, them places downtown Detroit only have a few o f my people visiting them, and that's a sight to see isn't is?
Daniel.T Drug dealers comes in all colors, and for anyone to just focus on Blacks is a racist. So again I suggest that you find out yourself. Also Danie I don't know where most of these a******* get that bullcrap from, and them same ones are the ones who throw stones at Detroit..yet they live outside of Detroit.

All I have seen in this forum, is people calling each other racist and stuff. That is not why I posted this forum. How else am I going to find out about a place and see if I like it, if I don't experience it? You all sound like my mom. "Don't go to Detroit. The black drug dealers will shoot you." Where do you guys come up with this crap? Sure there are bad things about Detroit, but I don't think I should have any problems as long as I stick to the better areas, and not be dumb, like some people think.
I am looking forward to coming, so thank you to those out there who have been giving me real info, instead of attacking me because I am curious about a place.

Danial.T Your post makes alots of senses to me, but remember in life that is always a few bad seeds, and I hope that you will discover things different then what you have read on here. Good Luck.

Daniel: If you're an independent thinker, Detroit could be the place for you. (Imagine being surrounded by people who choose to live in Detroit.) Expect to have a good time. Downtown and Wayne State are absolutely safe. Suburban people like to make negative generalizations about Detroit and Detroiters, but it is a great city with a 300-year history and many great people choose to live In Detroit. Come and see the fountains, the statues, the riverfront, and the architecture; you could spend an entire day sight-seeing within walking distance of your hotel. You'll never know if you don't visit.

Don't go walking around the city of Detroit by yourself woman! It's much too dangerous. Regardless of what some Detroit lovers may say, it's the second most dangerous city in the nation! It's crime-ridden! Sure, the downtown area has become nicer over the years. But you better not make a wrong turn when you are down there or you could find danger. I still wouldn't be caught walking downtown not being in a large group. No way. It's not a good city in that way.

I know that you won't be downtown unless you have your army of suburbian white boys with you MovingAround2. Especially since you seem to be the internet Detroit warner. I see right through you, but I know you have good damn senses, and in YOUR own words........I still wouldn't be caught walking around downtown. Why not? you are bad on here.

Wayne State is qutie the eclectic place to be in Detroit! My sister recently graduated from there (WSU) and would tell me all kinds of neat stories of that area! She even lived by campus along the Cass Corridor! Go for it!
Detroit is like any other major city in the U.S with bad areas and good areas and a need to keep your common sense about you!
If you have any specific questions, let me know!
