Beirut without the air raid sirens
Let me clarify.
Like I said yesterday going to Wayne State is a good decsion.
What the other posters said about WSU is correct.
WSU has a top notch medical and engineering school. Go there.
If I sound like your mom well thanks for the compliment.
Mom is right.
(By the way out of state tution will cost mom a kings ransom)
I stand by what I said.
Detroit is a mean, angry, dirty and ugly city.
I work in the neighborhods in a human servce field.
It is a miserable place to live.
Outsiders are not welcomed here.
The neighborhoods, (not the downtown area) are bad places for you to go playing around in.
Brother Williamx knows what I am talking about.
Sure parts of the downtown are nice, but it will wear off after awhile.
Downtown is actually kinda boring. Especially if you are under 21
You came here looking for information about the city I am giving you information about the city.

The Human Service field in the Hood?
Well Mike, I could not force myself to [quote] your whole post. However just
because the neighborhoods is rundown do not stop me from performing my job
for Wayne County. I do not allow my skin color to prevent me from visiting my
white clients in their community, and as a professional person if I can't help I would leave a situation alone.
There is some beautiful homes in nice neighborhoods of Detroit, but in other areas of the city things can happen, and common (professional) senses will tell a person don't go into the hood acting like you own it. However everyday
life in the neighborhoods of Detroit is different then being downtown Detroit.
Here in the metro Detroit area we have people from all walks of life, and of course a visit here in Detroit is no difference that visiting Manhatten NY.
My suggestion is...if a visit thinks that he or she can come in Detroit, and start some racist s*** they have a rude awakening coming.
Detroit has alots of interesting places to visit, and many historical landmarks
for one to enjoy. Just because we have a few on here that hates Detroit,
but the fact still remains they once lived here, and alots of people who live in the suburbs claim they are from Detroit. Mostly entertainers who is from Royal Oak,or Groose Pointe, is good at claiming Detroit to be their home, and yet
they hate Detroit. So on a closing tip....Welcome to the Motor City.

I've lived in the Detroit area my entire life and I hate it (I can't wait to move to Chicago, which is like Detroit, but incredibly different). Detroit is the most racist, segregated metropolitan area in the country. The burbs are extremely boring and cookie cutter and it seems as though most people in the area love complacency and hate minorities. The city itself is dirty and crime filled. HOWEVER, with that being said, Detroit (the city) still has a lot to offer. It has an underground, gritty scene as far as art, music, and overall lifestyle goes. There's more potential in Detroit than anywhere else in the country. Problem is, the people who live in the metro Detroit area. If you can kick out most of the people in the area and start all over again, every person in the world interested in urban development/planner/living, would flock here. But for now, life goes on in gloomy metro Detroit.

More Detroit Questions
Has anyone stayed at or been near the Milner hotel? I have heard pretty good reviews about the hotel. It is located on Centre st. downtown near Comerica Park. I will also be staying at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center. Pretty cool.
What are some sights I should see while in Detroit? Mainly downtown, and up to about Wayne State. I would like to go to the suburbs, but it will cost a lot to take a cab, and bus service isn't great. Anyone know of any buses that go to Windsor? is it possible to take a cab across? Thanks and I appreciate your feedback.

There are many things to see along Jefferson between the Ren Cen and Cobo Hall. Greektown is between your hotels (Monroe and Beaubien). The lobby of the Guardian building is worth stopping for. There are several statues and historical markers on Washington Boulevard, which was redone recently. Campus Martius Park, Grand Circus Park, and the Fox Theater are all on Woodward.
The People Mover is a good way to get around downtown. (I think you can get to everything on my list on the People Mover.) They have a nice map and directory on their website.

There is a bus that runs regularly through/to the Windsor, Ontario tunnel. You'll notice the different looking bus that makes frequent stops by where you're staying. Yes, it's possible to take a cab across to Windsor but beware not to when the tunnel is packed usually during events and rush hour.

more questions about Detroit
Hi, I have seen videos and pics of people going up to the roof of the Broderick tower and the MCS. Is it safe or legal to go to the top of those buildings? Are there tour groups that go up there? I was looking at some neighborhoods to live in when I am out of college and saw some nice housing near the intersection of Livernois and 7 mile. Is that a nice area? looks like some nice housing that is fairly inexpensive compared to the suburbs. Appreciate all answers.

Detroit is filled with inexpensive housing. There's a reason for that. They have low property values, high crime, no jobs, etc. I wouldn't live there if you paid me to. The Icy River Vagabond is joking with you.

I get the feeling that most of the people posting have not spent much time in the city, and those of you who have, have not given Detroit enough of a chance.
I have a beautiful downtown apartment with a view, safe and secure parking, and plenty of bars, restaraunts and a few shops within walking distance. I have never been the victim of a crime (not that it doesn't happen), and my life has greatly improved since moving here from Kalamazoo.
I really don't know where to begin with all the hate I see spewed toward detroiters on this forum (supposedly we are the rude people).
Detroit is far from Utopia, but I would reccomend it for anyone to visit.
And to the Moderator cut: personal people that say that Detroit Would eat a 17 year old alive, Tell that to the tens of thousands of students who attend Wayne State University.

I second this 100%
